Am trying to stop paying extortionate prices for small pots of growing herbs that I chuck out every so often so am going to attempt to try and grow some. But I am a complete beginner and there will be a lot of stupid questions. :) I have a few old pots of dead herbs which have compost (or what I presume are compost) can I…

Hedgehogs and ponds.
Sorry, didn't know where to post this but I'm hoping you keen gardeners can help me. I've put a plastic pond in my back garden in the hopes of attracting some wildlife. I've done that alright - about 6 weeks ago I found two baby hedgehogs floating in it. I was really upset, but assumed that they were thirsty and as they…

Going away for 2 weeks, how do you make sure plants get enough water?
Hello! Mr MFG2B and I are going to France to see the rest of the MadFrench/SpanishFamily for Xmas. Since this is going to be for about 2 weeks, is there a way for us to make sure that our plants get enough water without getting someone to come in and do it for us (it is xmas after all, people have other things to do). I…

garden goodness sapped by neighbours conifers, what to plant?
Hi folks! Am starting to consider the spring, with all this depressing wet dark weather. My problem is this, neighbours on both sides have conifers, one side had them chopped right back, other hasn't. So the roots from both sides invade my garden. I cultivated a small patch at the back of the garden which I had a good crop…

Not available online you have to phone and quote "Grow it magazine" and the plants won't come til next May - Victoriana Nursery gardens 01233 740529. I've made an order and bought a few other things too, they have a lot of nice less common…

Creating a new garden in November (ie this week!)
We have a patch of tatty land 18ft x 18ft. The southern side has a 4 story building next to it so it doesn't get lots of light. There are also 3 large trees on the east side that take quite a lot of water from the soil. Not ideal. It used to be grass with bushes and flowers in spring but people parked on it and reduced it…
