What are my heating and electricity options?
Hi all, I own an Edinburgh tenement - top floor and I am intending to extend into the attic. At the moment I have a mains gas supply which goes to my hob and a fire in the lounge. I have a meter which allows me to use Economy 7 rates and all hot water is via an electric immersion water tank. I have electric storage heaters…

Electricity pricing explained. Octopus energy
Interesting https://octopus.energy/blog/agile-pricing-explained/ In summary it's Wholesale price + Transmission costs (2-7p but only applies during 4-7pm) + Balancing costs (about 0.2p but varies) + Distribution costs (10-15p but close to zero outside of peak) + Capacity market (5-10p but only winter peak periods) +…

Pylontech self discharge
My 2 Pylontech batteries haven't been charged since the 25th when we last had some decent pv generation (haven't started grid charging yet) and since then, the SOC has dropped from the 15% I set as the max DOD to 11%. 4% seems quite a bit to drop in less than 3 days. Is this normal ?

Solar PV mains connection question
I have a 3.6kW PV system with a Fronius inverter which has been running without problems for the past 7 years. Due to some issues recently I now have concerns it is not correctly connected. My inverter is connected via its meter and isolating switch to a MCB which is on the RCD section of my consumer unit. This RCD also…

Ideas for eco-friendly Christmas wrapping
As a family we've drastically cut down on plastic use this year, particularly single use plastic, one thing we've also been doing is not buying new when we already have something at home we can use, so birthday presents this year have been wrapped in various papers we had left over on rolls, I've come to the end of this…

Advice on Zappi charger quote please
Hi, I wondered if anyone who has had a Zappi charger installed can comment on this quotation please. My installation involves going through a 275mm cavity wall, around 14m of cabling, 5m clipped externally and 9m in trunking internally and a new mini consumer unit installed in the meter box. It will be internally mounted…

Solar panel advice
We are doing well with our panels. After 3.5 years we have made 30% of the cost in generation payments. So considering we also save on electricity costs I am very happy with the return. Is there any software we can use that can tell us how well we are utilising the electricity we generate ? We have our names down for a gen…

Homeless
We are all aware of the problem of being homeless, sleeping rough. People slept ' rough' for one night in the centre of London, in their masses to bring the problem to the fore. Their intentions are good. I have just seen on the news, that they all had what looked like orange, plastic, padded sleeping bags issued to them,…

Best Electric Fan
Hello, not sure if this is the right section so please advise if I’m wrong. I’m looking for a reasonably priced fan that is also energy efficient. I have a phobia of bugs and can’t leave my window open on a night, and in summer it doesn’t make much difference if I do. However I’m prone to sweating even in winter, I have a…

Mis Sold Solar Panels
I was mis sold Solar Panels by Energy Hypermarket in 2014 and promised they would be self funding. Energy Hypermarket is in liquidation and the loan is with Shawbrook. I have had a few letters from solicitors offering to take my claim on which I am not interested in. I would much rather take it up myself and avoid any…

Solar Newbie needing help with generation meter reading!
We have just purchased a house with a solar PV installation and I am trying to transfer the FiT payments into my name. It is feeling very daunting! My main problem at the moment (although I am struggling to get my head around it in general!) is reading the generation meter to give British Gas a reading. It is a Rayleigh…

Looking for Solar PV Supplier / installer reccommendations
Hi all. Looking to get some silicon on my roof, possibly some lead or lithium under the stairs, and so looking for any information regarding reputable, reliable, and reasonable installers for such. Roof has two major segments, SE and NE facing (guessing the NE isn't so great) and whilst I'm looking to get as much power as…

With gas boilers potentially being banned in new homes from 2025, should we look at alternatives now
We need to replace our boiler ASAP and I'm wondering if it's worth looking at heat/air pumps? They're very expensive on the up front cost but it looks like in the (very) long run the savings make it worthwhile? I'm a bit concerned about the work involved though, and the physical space it uses. Any thoughts please? Thanks

Solar Equity Release
Hi All, Just thought I would share my experience .... Like others I am sure, most of the mail I get that has anything relating to solar panels goes straight in the bin. It’s normally offering a free health check on the system recently. One correspondence recently though caught my eye as it was from Solar Equity Release and…

Maybe UK govt are not crazy
So, picking up on a couple of things that joefizz has mentioned in discussions. Big problems! First, that a very high proportion of plug-in electric hybrids subsidised by the government (by a variety of means) have in fact never been plugged in, and therefore are worse for the environment than if the subsidy had never been…

Recommendations for Energy Performance Certificate for RHI payments
Morning all. We have just more or less completed a major rebuild / renovation on our house, and as part of this installed a solar thermal system which has just been signed off (we have the Micro Generation Certificate). We understand now we have to get a Energy Performance Certificate before we can apply for RHI - there…

We hit our 5 MWh milestone on our solar PV system yesterday. Almost 1.3 tonnes of CO2 saved from going into the atmosphere, and savings in the bank!
