Diversifying for downturns
Hello, I have been investing in 5 funds for the last 18 month, as with most investments they tanks (some more than others) during the recession but they have grown exponentially since March. I'm slightly concerned my portfolio isn't positioned well enough in the event of a sudden drop, downturn or major correction. The…

Premium Bonds
I want to buy some for my wife. She already has some. Tried to buy some online but wouldn't accept my card to buy for her. Found out from Post Office that I can't buy with a cheque either. I'm sure I've done this before. Is there any way of buying PBs for my wife? Thanks for help.

a safe place for 200k
Hi I currently have 200k sitting in an Abbey on-line account. I'm not happy with this for two reasons. a) The interest rate is poor b) The security of my money (I realise only 50k is protected etc) I had intended to move it all to an NS&I 1 year bond, however these have since been withdrawn. NS&I appeals to me because of…

Barclays Regular Saver Interest Rate
Dear MSE, Last December, there was an article on MSE.com about the Barclays regular saver account which I am certain included a quote from Barclays head of savings stating that if a regular saver account was opened by 31 December 2008,it would qualify for a rate of 7.75% even though the published rate at the time was 6% Do…

Are Dimensional Fund Advisors on any investor platforms?
I would like to invest in some of the products of Dimensional Fund Advisors (index trackers with a twist), but if I go through a fee-charging IFA I would have to pay about 1% fee to the IFA, which negates the benefit of the low TER of the DFA funds. They aren't available from Hargreaves Lansdown or Alliance Trust. Is…

savings
I have £22,000 saved which I have had in a fixed rate bond for the last 5 years, previously with Bradford and Bingley, now Santander. This year when it matured I went in to a different branch to the one I would normally use and was told that it would mature the day after even though it clearly said on the bond it matured…

Transferring ISA
Hello I have an ISA with Abbey, the e-saver. It's not a very good interest rate at the minute so I am considering transferring over to my Nationwide ISA. I think my Abbey ISA matures in mid April. Basically what sort of time do I have to notify the bank without incurring any penalty on my yearly interest? Am I right in…

Transferring a fixed term ISA
I note that whilst providers imply that if you invest in a fixed term cash ISA you can't get your money out until the end of the term, in fact you can. Legislation insists that you be allowed to close it, usually with a loss if interest of up to 180 days. My question is whether transferring the funds to another cash ISA…

Protection in fund supermarkets
I have read there is protection in fund supermarkets in case they go bust. Is this for money held with the firm who you invested with or the funds they invest in. Hope this makes sense. Thank you

Online savings bond help!
I opened an online bond with Barnsley expecting to be able to pay in money until the end of the 3 year term and they've just sent me an email saying that the offer has now been withdrawn and I have two days left to pay money in!!! Have I just mis-understood the concept of a bond? I'm pretty new to this way of saving; I…

fixed rate savings dropping
Several of my high interest fixed rates have come to an end and while I have dithered the rates have gone down over the last couple of weeks or so. Is this because the banks/building societies are raising more money on wholesale market? Or is it likely that after the Christmas lull the rates may go up again slightly. Am at…

What can you do when your Share Dealing company messes up instructions?
Hi all, Looking for some general advice. Recently Lloyds had a Right Issue where existing share holders are given the option to buy additional shares at a reduced price based on their current share holding. users who didn't take up these rights received a nominal amount for each of the shares offered. Closing Halifax Web Saver Reward early
Does anyone know what interest rate you earn on a Halifax Web Saver Reward that is closed before the year has ended? I opened a 2.5% account in June but have now opened their 3% account. To simplify things, I like to close old accounts rather than keep them open. What rate would I receive on closure, 2.5% or 0.1%? I…

NS&I interest question
Hi, a few days ago I created a Guaranteed Growth Bond with NS&I. I visited the Fixed Account page on this website to view the table which displayed what interest I would earn depending on how long I left it in the account, and its gone! Is that NS&I account no longer favourable (in which case I must have just snuck in…

Fund supermarket question
I see that the initial charges of depositing with a fund supermarket offer discounts but is this on the initial deposit and not future deposits. If I deposit £5000 most of that will be deposited but if next year I deposit another £5000 is that discounted or not or is there charges to that deposit? Thanks
