Premium Bonds

I want to buy some for my wife. She already has some. Tried to buy some online but wouldn't accept my card to buy for her. Found out from Post Office that I can't buy with a cheque either. I'm sure I've done this before. Is there any way of buying PBs for my wife? Thanks for help.

Just fill a form in and you can pay using a debit card at the post office.

Google 'premium bonds' and you'll find out how to invest online here. Includes details of all acceptable payment methods!

You can also go to the PO and use a cheque or debit card. From their website:
    "
    Cheque and debit card clearance

If you buy your Bonds by cheque or debit card, your payment will be cleared on the seventh working day (ie excluding weekends and English bank holidays).
For example, if we receive your cheque or debit card details on a Monday, your payment will be cleared on the Tuesday of the following week. Allow one additional day for each English bank holiday.
Bonds can only be cashed in after your payment has cleared.
If you buy your Bonds at a Post Office® branch and pay by cheque, your payment will take two working days longer to clear.
We will bank your cheque, or start to process your debit card payment, as soon as we receive it, so please make sure you have enough money in your account at the time. "

Personally I like having some premium bonds as part of my portfolio, AFTER filling up my entire ISA allowance and having a significant sum in an instant access.

Not more than say 0.5% though, call me naive but I like the idea of winning a big prize.

Give National Savings a call on 05000 007 007, they will be able to help you. I usually call up toward the end of the month and buy some because you have to hold them for 1 clear month before they are eligible in the draw.

Thanks all. Spoke to NSI office. I would have to send a cheque by post or buy with cash at PO.

Why? Buying as a present. Why should I deny my wife one guaranteed thrill a month?

Is that the best you can do as a Thrill?
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

  • Yes, for some daft reason I like premium bonds too! Have just taken out some as I may or may not be selling my house later this coming year and happy to have money on 8-day access. I have used Martin's calculator, so know that they are pretty useless! Here's hoping the S&S Isa's do their thing this year.

Am I feeling lucky? Nah, but who knows!

    Good luck with them anyway.

I have some premium bonds and realise that they devalue slowly and that they don't pay interest in the same way as a bank account.
However, in the 18months since I bought mine, i've won £175 in 4 prizes.

And to the those who are seemingly mocking the idea......every month someone wins £1m and several others win tens of thousands, as I'm sure you know.......would you mock them for having premium bonds too?
