Why would they nationalise?
Hi Guys, I'm fairly new to investing but have always had a very strong interest in economics. There's something I don't get about the nationalisation thing when it comes to the likes of RBS and Lloyds et al. Given that the government is: - Guaranteeing all desposits - Insuring just every crap asset the banks now hold -…

probate with discretionary trust
I recently lost my father who had a discretionary trust in place at the time of his death. As my mum is still alive and everything will pass to her under the spouse exemption rule we do not feel that probate will be too complicated. The solicitors have estimated a fee of £5,000 which we feel is over the top so we will…

Low interest rates
When banks lend us money they expect a fair return for their money. When we lend banks our money we expect a fair return for our money. With ISAs paying 1.5% and other account paying .5% I don't call this a fair return do you.

Okay, I have a question. I want to have an account denominated in GBP, held in the UK (or one of the dependencies). I'd like to have debit card access to the account, as transferring money between the UK and Poland is quite painful. Does anyone know who would let me open such an account, as I'm resident in Poland and no…

Anglo Irish Bank
Since the unscrupulous dealings of the directors of Anglo Irish Bank and its subsequent nationalisation I am wondering if, having only opened a 1 year fixed rate bond on 18 December 2008, Sean Fitpatrick resigned 19/12/08 when his dealing came to light, and the fact that this bond was only taken out because they advertised…

Is it generally worth buying £100 - £200 worth of shares
Hi guys, I'm kind of interested in playing a little bit with shares - almost as just a bit of fun rather than anything serious. I certainly wouldn't risk thousands of pounds that I couldn't afford to lose. So just as a little bit of an experiment I was thinking about taking a couple of hundred quid and putting it into one…

My "friend" needs advice, please
If the building society sent my friend a cheque in error and my friend innocently put it into her bank account, how long could pass before the building society could not ask for the money back or could they ask for it back at any time in the future? I, of course, will advise my friend to send the cheque back forthwith!…

I've some investment funds that I'd like to shelter from tax by using my ISA allowance next year. I see several brokers offer 'Bed and Isa' options to achieve this, but I can't see the difference between 'Bed and Isa' and simply selling the investment fund myself and re-investing the proceeds in the same fund, only under…
