Fundamental Question Regarding Pensions
Hi All, I have (had) been a member of 3 company pensions covering the last 28 years approx and have always 'paid in' regularly to the companys scheme. However, last August I was made redundant at the age of 50. I have recently accepted a contract in Germany (where I pay local tax) but since July of last year have not made…

Start Paying Pension Again or Pay Off Debt
I haven't posted for a while, as I was busy working and sorting things out. Anyway, we have moved forward with our situation and got my pension sorted and paid off a bank loan. We've also got a lot of work done in the house and come off our fixed rate mortgage. Now on a rate of 2.09% above the base rate for the duration of…

Can I invest in a different way?
Hi there, I wonder if someone may be able to offer me some advice? Recently my mum, after paying into her pension for over 25 years, discovered that it actually wasn't even worth the paper it was written on, only expecting to receive £500 a year from her company pension. This got me thinking about my own pensions and I…

Wife's State Pension position
My wife is aged 34 and for the past 9 years has not worked as she has stayed at home looking after our kids, oldest of whom is 9, youngest 3. Previous to this she was in full time employment from the age of 17. By virtue of the fact I am a higher rate taxpayer, from January this year she has elected not to receive child…

Is my pension doing OK
I checked my pension. In 2005 I invested £100,000. The fund value is now £145,000. So it has gone up 45% in 12 years. Starting with £100,000 and compounding the growth for 12 years to get to £145,000 is 3.2% per annum. Is it OK or should I change? The allocation is like this: Aberdeen Eur FrontierA 7% Artemis European…

Independent advisor
Hi all, Can anyone give me some advice please. A year or so ago I retired (I'm 65 in October) and subsequently withdrew my company pension and put it in a managed fund with a reputable investment company. Both the fund manager and my advisor take their fee as usual. My two questions are these: 1. Can I change my financial…

Friends Life - Selftrade - SIPP option?
My work is likely to move to a Friends Life pension plan (New Generation I believe), which has a range of low cost passive funds. I am considering setting this up as a portfolio based on Hale and Ferri type asset models. The FL fund range is a little limited and you can only choose ten. One option we can exercise as we are…

Transfer NHS Pension into LGPS - Or Not?
I'm wondering if I should transfer my NHS pension into my current LGPS, or if I should keep it with the NHS & would appreciate some comments &/or advice as I know nothing about pensions. My NHS pension transfer info gives a transfer value of £20,725 calculated on a CLUB basis (whatever CLUB is). This would give at age 60 a…

Deferred Pension (Hypothetical) Question
Harking back to a few questions I made a couple of weeks ago regarding a number of deferred pensions I have, today I received details concerning the largest single one. Let me preface the following questions by saying that I am not intending to leave the scheme, as i don't believe it's worth taking the chance, BUT... I'm…

Pension Contributions
Hi, Would appreciate any advice on a pension question I have. My employer was bought over recently and the new company had their own pension scheme so contributions to my old scheme were stopped. I made one contribution to the new company scheme, as we were automatically signed up, but then changed jobs. I now have a 2…

Pension - Off the Radar
Our son works abroad at a British Embassy. He doesn't work for the FCO, but is a locally employed member of staff. He got the job when I worked for the FCO and was on a posting to the Embassy. Additional Pension Benefits?
Hi Folks, I am new to this forum, hope I'm not making any errors! I have an option to purchase APB to support my Teachers Pension. I am 55 and plan to retire at 60. These are index linked and would cost me now £33000 to buy additional pension of £2000 (before tax). There are no benefits to my wife if I die early. At the…

Pension and inflation?? Worried!
I've just recently started my first pension at 30. I pay in about 16% of my income as suggested on the guides. They sent me a forecast of 3 different possible outcomes for my pension pot at 65. the highest forecast was about £180,000. Which sounds ok. But not so good if you take into account 35 years inflation. It works…
