Encashing SIPP
I have a small SIPP (£12k) and being over 60 with little chance of it increasing significantly I would like to cash it in. I know it used to be that if the fund was less than £15k it could in cashed in full rather than being used to provide a pension. Does anyone know if that is still the limit?

Stakeholder Pension with tiny firm-worth it?
Hi, I've just started a job with a tiny company (less than 10 employees) that offers a stakeholder pension scheme. Based on the details I have so far, it doesn't seem apparent that my employer will be making a contribution if I enroll in the scheme, so I'm unsure what to do. I'm currently in my 40s and have been paying…

Personal Pension
Sorry if this has been asked a million times, I haven't had time to search through all the old posts. Currently I don't work, I left work almost 3 years ago to look after our 3 children, and don't intend going back - even part time- until they are all in primary school, so at least another 2 1/2 years. My husband works,…

Confused about state-pension and all the changes
With the new flat-rate pension of £144 coming in 2016 how will in the Queens Speech with a 35% increase in state-pension going up to £155 a week change things. Also for pension-credit purposes at a single person needing £145.20p to live on would this £155 mean no more pension-credits. Is this a way to stop people getting…

Unmarried - does it matter?
I know very little about pensions, I'm currently a SAHM so I don't even know whether I have state-pension contributions at all! DH is paying into his pension through work (Royal Mail), but knows very little about what any of it means. The pension deficit of RM is rather large so I don't expect he'll recieve anything in 40…

Should I pay into redundancy into AVCs?
Hi, I will shortly be made redundant and the total settlement will be worth £80k. Up until about 6 months ago, I have paid 10% of my salary into my pension since I joined my company seven years ago. I stopped it so I could accrue some additional savings while I am unemployed. The settlement is much more than I expected, so…

Pensions advice on the new changes 2014
I retire January 2014 and understand that there will be some changes to the state pension next year. Anything that is likely to affect me? Do I need to defer for a while until it's sorted? I could do with drawing ASAP as very little income, still self-employed. Think the pension may go from £120 to £140 per week and I…

SERPS in or out
Some years back, I can't remember how long, but we had the option to opt out of SERPS. At that time my company (small firm) had someone from Barclays Bank come to the office to tell us how much more beneficial it would be to opt out. So, I did. In 1995 I moved to the US and so my NI contributions stopped. I believe up…

Pension Contributions
Hi all, I was a watcher, and this is my first post! After looking on this site, it says as a rule of thumb, your pension contributions should be your age/2. But at what age is this ideally started at. ie 65 = 32.5%, but if you were to start this in your last year then it's pointless. So at what age is this formula decided…

Do I REALLY need a financial adviser before I consolidate my pension?
Do I really need financial advice to make this decision, or is AEGON being stupid? I have two personal pensions (left over from different jobs I have since left). I want to consolidate them - transfer the value of one into the other. This will reduce admin charges, mean less paperwork, make it easier to keep track of what…

I turned 65 on Friday 3 May and already I'm a tad confused with the State Pension payments dates. Here's why:- As my NI number ends with 27, I assumed my pension payment day would be on a Tuesday but their letter informs me that I will be paid from Wednesday 8 May. Today is 8th May and nothing has been paid to my account…

NHS superannuation pension query
Hi. Have a question, no idea if anyone here can help, but getting info elsewhere seems very difficult. My mother is 73, worked for the NHS as a nurse from 1958-1975 and paid into the superann pension scheme throughout that time. She never claimed either a lump sum or weekly pension at any time. She's never had any money in…

State pension for expats and foreigners
According to the press the Government are looking at stopping State Pensions for foreign spouses that have not worked in Britain. It looks like at the moment they qualify for a State Pension if their husband has paid NIC in the UK, but new rules will stop this. Does anyone understand the rules that apply in this situation:…

Salary Sacrifice, Pension, Tax Rate Question
I get a 5% + 5% pension with my new employer. I am just in the top rate of tax at £45k. I have been offered the option to pay my 5% and they pay their 5% pension, OR they pay a slightly higher amount to my pension and me a reduced salary of £42,672. The net effect is that I take home exactly the same, they pay out exactly…
