Cold weather payments
One of my friends told me that the cold weather payments only kick in if there have been 7 consecutively below freezing days. What a cop out, as the temps only have to go over 0.00c for a fraction for them to be of no use whatsoever . Is this another Government con to keep the 'grey power' in its place ? I am sitting…
Probate concerns
This is my problem. I am Number 3/5 children. The eldest child is my half sister and she doesn't get along with at least 3 of us. Recently, my mum was ill and she was moved to a nursing home by my half sister. My brother-in-law (her husband) applied for power of attorney and despite every effort on my part to be named…
My pensioner parents and santander savings !!!! up
My elderly mum and dad sold their old house a couple of years ago and took the lump sum from that to invest and use this to supplement my fathers work pension which is pretty small. This is the largest sum of money they have ever had in their lives and while not fools they are not particularly financially savvy. In…
Age awareness
I read an article about a 63 year old woman and it described her as "elderly." 18 year olds would probably think "ancient". As we're on an over 50s forum, what age do you classify as elderly?
saga Malta Coastline hotel. Anyone stayed there?
I have been to Malta 3 times and have enjoyed it very much, particularly the archaeology and history. I have booked the saga coastline hotel and am dithering about changing the type of view I booked. I would really appreciate some comments if you have been there
Disagree with social services?
Hello, my nan is 85 and she hasn't been diagnosed yet but we are sure she has dementure which has gone down hill lately. She lives alone in a 3 bed house (upstairs toilet) and has just "given up", she stopped eating unless you placed it infront of her (my mum even cooked meals and put them on plates with written…
Walking on ice a problem?
You can use old socks over your shoes to stop you from skidding about. It may not be the most elegant look but sitting on your bottom, impromptu, isn't very elegant either! Neither are broken bones. You can use tights but they don't last long and don't grip so well. Happy walkie walkie!
Care costs and equity release - slightly complicated
Hi all, I'm posting here on behalf if my parents aged 60 and 61 just to see if anyone has experienced the same thing we are going through. My Mum has MS and over the weekend came down with a chest infection, unfortunately this caused her to lose all mobility in her legs and as my Dad has been ill for a week or so with the…
Enduring Power of attorney
Does anyone know how much it will cost to register this through the courts. I've been scouring the internet without luck. Also once in place would it prevent someone taking advantage of someone with dementia? ie marrying them to take their home/money. Thanks
Safeguarding the grandchildrens' inheritance
My wife and I are both 70. Only one child, our daughter (38), with children aged 9 and 7. We want to make wills, leaving much of our 'estate' to our daughter but also leaving a tidy sum for our two grandchildren when they reach 18 or 21 (not decided yet). We are reluctant to simply leave their cash for our daughter to look…
Help for MIL
Hi folks, Hoping to tap into other's brilliant ideas. Warning longish post! My MIL has recently been moved by us to a home - for a 'holiday' for a while. She has vascular dementia and although her long term memory is ok her short term memory is dreadful. She lived a long way from us and we were getting very distressing…
