Advice on DIY Lipbalms
I decided to make lipbalm as little Xmas gifts. I already have shea butter and coconut oil and I had some soy wax that I looked up and I could use instead of bees wax. I have ordered the tubes and they should arrive tomorrow. I have played around with it and made some up to test it and added a bit of peppermint. Only thing…

Does anyone have a kenwood mixer? Would you recommend it?
My ancient breville mixer died a few years back and I replaced it with a hand held electric whisk. That's died too now, and DH has offered to buy me a mixer for Christmas. We have some vouchers too to put towards it so I'm thinking of spoiling myself with a Kenwood. I know they are a lot but I think they last a lifetime?…

Repurposing a piano?
Hi. We have an upright piano. It's 1920s I think. It's quite pretty but the keys are peeling their ivory and it is massively out of tune. We don't play it. I spoke to the piano tuner and he said no one really wants old pianos. I looked at the internet and wondered about repurposing it as something else. There are quite a…

Starting from scratch
A very close friend of mine is in the process of leaving an unhealthy relationship - her OH is not yet aware, but plans are in place for her to move out for good on the 2nd of January as he's away for a few days in the New Year. She will have little more than clothes and small personal items but I have lots of everything…

Aubergine in the slow cooker
Morning :) I'm doing chicken thighs in my slow cooker with chestnut mushrooms, red onions, chopped tomatoes and sliced potatoes. I have half an aubergine left over from another recipe and thought I'd chuck it in. But I'm not sure if I should fry it off in oil first or add it raw. I don't want it to turn slimy. I was…

Christmas Menu...
Evening guys, Im sitting trying to plan our Christmas menu. Im getting a little bored of the same starter and dessert. We usually have either chicken liver pate or ham hock terrine, then Christmas dinner with all of the trimmings (this year it will be capon, beef and venison) and for dessert is either pavlova or xmas pud.…

Prayers please
For my husband's family who live in Ventura USA, we have just heard that wild fires, fanned by a 50+ mile an hour winds are devastating all in their path. 27;000 people have been told to leave their homes.

My challenge this month..... clear the cupboards
So after what has been a fairly painful few weeks dealing with the breakup of my engagement and dealing with the process of securing myself my home, I have decided to set myself a challenge this month. With only one income nowadays and having to cover the mortgage alone, December is probably one of the worst months for…

Grocery shop revamp
We are a family of 4 (2 adults, 6yo and 2yo). I'm a SAHM and DH works and for the last year I have been focused on clearing all our debts (should be done by Feb - hurrah!). I will admit the stress has been huge but thankfully the end is in sight. However my meal planning has become non existent so would love any advice on…

BUJO Bullet Journalling 2018
Anyone here currently using or starting a bullet journal please? Using one of these seem to be a sensible idea to replace my usual scribbled list and notes on bits of random paper so I can be more organised for 2018

De'Longhi Magnifica..Bean To Cup
I bought the De'Longhi Magnifica Bean to Cup...Coffee Machinein Amazon’s Black Friday sale as it did seem a good price. I really haven’t made up my mind about it yet. Realistically for £198 I wasn’t expecting an all singing, all dancing machine The plus’s: yes it is easy to use, I’m not to fused about the noise, don’t let…

Recipes from Eat Well for Less Programme
I have watched this programme recently and recommended it to my friend who has taken on board the receipe for breakfast bars. I tasted one of hers and they were lovely so I decided to make my own. First thing is they have just crumbled and not set at all so I can't make them into bars. What have I done wrong? The other…

Weekly Flylady Thread 4th December 2017
WOOHOO IT IS :xmastree:.....DECEMBER..... :xmastree: What is FLYLADY? Well, it's our version of the US flylady idea - but we work on the principle that housework is not fun, it's boring, can be time-consuming, is often thankless but, unfortunately, necessary. It's here on Old Style to provide the support we all need and to…

The price/cost of lazyness.
I was in Tesco earlier, and fancied some dates. The difference in price, between pitted and un-pitted was shocking. An 800 gram box of un-pitted dates cost £3-75, which is £4-69 per kilogram. A 200 gram tray of pitted dates cost £2, which is £10 per kilogram. More than double the price, for the convenience of not…
