fresh figs & chinese gooseberries
My neighbour went on holiday this afternoon and passed me in a carrier bag of salad/fruit that they weren't able to use up. This included a punnet of fresh figs (yummy) and another of Chinese gooseberries. (Yes, they have a LOT more money than we do!) Of course, I could just sit and eat them as they are, but they're not…

Shoe Repairs - Are they Worth It?
Hi All, I have a really good pair of shoes, however the souls are becoming dangerous to walk in especially when it's wet as they've lost their grip. My question is, is it worthwhile going to a cobblers to get new souls put on or is this a waste of money and am I better off buying a new pair of shoes?

calling all bakers please
Hi everyone, I need to bake quite a few portions of dessert for a good cause. I have a large number of glass ramekins from Gu desserts. I wanted a sponge base, little bit of jam, cream and sprinkle of fresh fruit to make it pretty and easily transported in individual portions. What is the simplest sponge recipe you would…

Herbalife
Hi all, a friend of mine has just talked me into doing the Herbalife free trial as she is an agent for them. She gave me a taste of the shake drink and it tasted lovely so I decided to start it tomorrow. However, I have received advice since from work colleagues that its better to just eat proper food. I don't need to lose…

Simmer Mat-Heat Diffuser
Does anyone here use one of these? My smallest burner - and the flame is very low - will still get a fairly decent sized stock pot up to a near boil when all I'm wanting is a slow gentle plop-plop :rotfl: for slow cooking stews, soups etc... Yes, I do use my slow cooker but there are some things I would rather have going…

Could the OStylers help with suggestions for home made tea. I'm spending a fortune on Twynings and Teapigs. I have tried Aldi/Lidl but the flavour is not the same. What are your favourites?

Freezer inventory
Hi, I was wondering how everyone keeps an eye on there freezer stock ? I normally just write a running list, and then cross off when I use something, and add new items to the end of the list, but this doesn't seem very organised as gets messy. I don't really use my laptop that much so would rather keep something written…

Meal ideas carers can manage
Ok I now have carers in for my lunch and teatime. Effectively they have 15 minutes to make a meal. I am getting fed up of cheap ready meals, microwaved jacket potatoes and scrambled eggs. Really I need a meal plan to be able to budget as money is so tight. I have to avoid pulses and legumes for health reasons so the usual…

Large carrier bag of apples!
I have been very kindly given a rather large carrier bag of cooking apples. Would love some ideas what I could do with them all apart from usual suspects of apple pies and apple cakes. Dont really have any use for stewed apples so thinking would need to make actual end product desserts with them all and fill my freezer.

Soya bean paste - what should I do with it?
I've got a small carton of soya bean paste in my fridge. A friend gave it to me and I don't want it to go to waste, but I'm not sure how to use it up. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Weekly Flylady Thread 18th September 2017
What is FLYLADY? Well, it's our version of the US flylady idea - but we work on the principle that housework is not fun, it's boring, can be time-consuming, is often thankless but, unfortunately, necessary. It's here on Old Style to provide the support we all need and to make the whole task easier and quicker. We also…

Is it woirth buying a new bowl for MR multicooker
I have come into possession of Morphy Richards Multicooker ( Intellichef I think) Its only just over a year old but the non stick coating is beginning to peel in places. I'm wondering if it's worth buying a replacement inner pan. I know that the person who gave it me is not the best at looking after pans. So is it likely…
