BOGOF's ....
...... which do you go for? Do you buy Bogof's simply because they are Bogof's or because they would form part of your menu plan/shopping list even if they were not?

Winter coat bargains
This year I've bought 3 winter coats, for less than £20! Can anyone beat that? Bought my daughters coat in Asda - £8 Sons coat in Asda, half price - £4 Husbands coat, Instore - £7 Bought my coat last year £40! I'm a large size so not that many bargains to be had, but I did lose 6lbs this week, so who knows I might get some…

Help! ink on wallpaper
I know it is probably a lost cause but apart from painting over my wallpaper does anyone have any ideas of how to remove biro marks from pale wallpaper? Unfortunately I do not appreciate the artistic displays of my 2 and 3 yr old boys and apart from chopping off their hands , I am at a loss as to what to do. Any…

Chickpeas and green lentils
Two questions: I have discovered a BIG (3kg) unopened bag of dried chickpeas lurking. I am soaking them now with a view to using them tomorrow - but my other half has just said 'You can't possibly use them' because they are 3 years out of date. I suspect they will need a bit more soaking and cooking but they will be fine -…

Save To Spend
It is fairly easy to budget for all the everyday, regular payments and monthly bills but what about all the one offs that even though we know about them always take us by surprise. Here is where a save to spend account comes in handy. Each year I make a list of all the one off payments and infrequents bills with estimate…

The great washing soda v vinegar debate
Following on from the bleach v vinegar thread, what vinegar based tasks can be carried out equally well with washing soda (since washing soda would seem to be a lot cheaper than vinegar). I'd suggest: Using as a water softener in the washing machine General cleaning use (in a spray bottle) Any others where it matches/tops…

Ready for the Challenge details? Here we go. The Challenge will begin at the start of the new financial year (this takes into account the annual increases to your Community Charge, water rates etc. plus any changes in the National Budget.) No point relying on your 2004-2005 budget when things are just about to increase for…

tahini paste (and substitutes?) (merged)
Made a load of houmus yesterday for me and the kids and thought that tahini reminded me of peanut butter. Looked on the net and lots of places recommend using peanut butter if you dont have or want to buy tahini. I've only ever seen it in Sainsburys so far anyway. I expect you'd need more olive oil/lemon juice or water to…

Roses And Spring
Now that spring is approaching I would be grateful of any old money saving advice with regard to spraying rose bushes and keeping bugs like green fly and black spot at bay. Thanks in anticipation.

Help!! Cranberry juice stain on wool carpet
Just returned from a break in Valencia and OETKB daughter has spilled a fizzy cranberry drink - she says - on the carpet and it is bigger than an A4 page. She says she tried to remove it with a cleaner I had in the cupboard (oxy-gel something?) and then white vinegar. I suspect it's really red wine. She has also got 2…

The great 'clean smell' rip off
It's occurred to me in all this talk of vinegar for cleaning etc that we've been conditioned to believe that there is such a thing as a 'clean' smell. Nearly all the branded cleaning products have perfume as an ingredient. When I first used value washing powder I was suspicious that my clothes weren't clean because they…

Baking Powder or Self Raising Flour?
Sorry if this is a really dumb question! I made chocolate brownies yesterday - it called for baking powder. Lurking at the back of the cupboard is baking powder - best before Dec 2000. So I used it anyway... and besides the brownies being a little flat, it seemed OK. Could I have used self raising flour instead? Is this is…

Baby Budgeter
Hi All, I'm fairly new to the boards, having had a lightbulb moment as part of sorting out my finances to buy my new flat. I move in at the end of april so I'm feeling a bit in limbo for sorting out my overall budgeting (as all my fixed costs will be changing dramatically really soon) but I'm getting really excited about…

Caravan, camping and holiday cookery
I mentioned this on another thread, sorry for repeating myself LOL. Went to a large second hand book barn yesterday searching for a book on slow cooking, no joy but did find a book called Caravan and Holiday cookery and as we're taking up camping this year I bought it to give me some ideas. It says on the back that the…

Cooking for the Freezer..
Having trawled through many of the so called frugal sites on the net this is something that I keep coming across. The idea is that you buy stuff in bulk and spend just a day cooking an entire months meals which you can freeze to bring out later in the month as your own ready-made meals. The claim is that you can halve the…
