Can anyone recommend any good cheese shops in Yorkshire/North of England? (I love me cheese and am prepared to travel) I'm sick of the supermarket/bog standard/zillions of types of cheddar stuff. I'm looking for cheese that hasn't been refrigerated to death like you get in fromageries in France.......any other…

They got butchers from Smithfields market to taste 3 different joints, 1 from an organic farm, 1 from supermarkets finest range and 1 from a High Street butchers. The majority chose the organic beef as the best. Ive never bought organic meat as yet,…

He has recently been diagnosed with diabetes and needs to also follow a low sugar regime. I can find loads of cookbooks for…

Compost
I'm interested in starting a compost heap, but would like to do this as frugally and cleanly as possible. Do I need any special equipment? My father has this big box thing in the garden - would I need that or could I just dump stuff in a heap? Would this attract rodents? How long do you have to leave stuff before using it?…

Cheapest meal
I'm starting this thread in the hope that people will come forth with the cheapest meal they can think of. I want suggestions on meals that are cheap and nutritious - so no suggesting that a bag of crisps is a meal. I'll start off with what my wife made for tea yesterday: Corned Beef Ash: 2 Cans of corned beef £1 (50px2) 2…

freezer question
I have a couple of jars of curry sauce (sharwoods etc) in my storecupboard I want to use up. However, a jar feeds about 3 portions, and I am just one! Even at my hungriest I'm not 3 portions greedy  If I cook it all, can I freeze the extra portions - or will the sauce not be able to stand this? They are of the…

Now & Then: 14-20 March '05
How are we all doing? Have you learned some new tips and tricks that you're incorporating? I only achieved half of my plans last week, but, as one of the biggest was to get dh to haggle - which was very successful - I can't complain :D Now: I have a renewed interest in slo-cooking. :) I won't be using it all the time…

The joys of Duck Tape
Having read our US cousins thoughts on the joys of Duck Tape over at a frugal living site, I thought I'd buy some. It is indeed very useful. I've already used it to mend the broken rail in my wardrobe, and to clamp together the sole of my shoe when I was glueing it in a repair job. My parents have had a leak in their shed…

How many times can you reheat a casserole?
I made a huge lamb casserole yesterday (to save time today), and reheated it today for my family gathering. There is quite a bit left, which is now in the fridge. Would it be safe to reheat it yet again, or should I ditch it? Hubby says well they used to have stockpots in the "old days" that went on for weeks and must have…

Decent gravy please.
Hiya fellow Ol' Stylers In my quest to rid my household of as many additives as possible, I have stopped using gravy granules and started making my own gravy. I always did use the meat and veg juices, just bunged in the granules and maybe a splosh of wine and all was hunky-dory. However, I have made a lamb and a chicken…

Recommendations for Slow Cookers please
I have been toying with the idea of getting one for a while. Was originally put off because I never liked anything that my Dad produced in one! However, I do like the idea of cooking something for hours, I usually cook a casserole for about three or four hours in the oven on a low heat, so I guess this will be more cost…

Cleaning/Waterproofing Walking Boots?
Any ideas for cleaning and waterproofing leather/Goretex lined walking boots? The Nikwax-type stuff is soooo expensive! Have tried using cheapo dubbin but it leaves me boots all icky and sticky and I do like to have a bit of a shine on them. Are there any 'old-fashioned' methods that are effective for someone who has a…

Peppers
Having read the garlic growing instructions I'd like to ask if any one knows how to grow peppers? Ex MIL used to grow them but I can't remember how she started them off. Can't really ask her (!), sets him off. I love the idea of 'free food' this summer with garlic, salad, herbs etc. Many thanks inanticipation.
