Cambelt - change it or risk it?
My astra has done 120,000 miles and is 12 years old. At recent service, mechanic advised I replace the cambelt. My dilemma is I'm planning to save for a new car and can't decide whether to do the cambelt now ( prob cost more than car is worth) or risk it for a few months till I buy a new car? I've been told if the belt…

Renewing paper licence at 70 - DVLA incapable of dealing with long standing addresses
Tried to renew online but DVLA said address not recognised. Been at current address for 40 years but Post Office (incorrectly) inserted an apostrophe in our village name 30 years ago. Local authority and HMRC still recognises proper village name (e.g. as per Electoral Roll and tax returns), so don't tell me the Post Office…

Road change result in fine but only know of it from collection agency
Hi everyone We just received an email from a collection agency for two driving infringements that happened on one day, after the local authority changed a section of the road to buses and taxis only. We never received the PCN after this happened and the collection agency email was the first we heard of this. It is a route…

What are our rights for scratches on second hand car?
Hi Two weeks ago we purchased an £11k second hand car (2015 reg) from Bristol Street Motors. We're really happy with the car, but last week noticed there are small circular scratches all down one side - having googled it, they appear to be from a buffing machine. It makes the side door panels look dull as well as the…

Speed rating of tyres
How important is speed rating on tyres? I can see £5 difference in price between the same model of tyre (speed difference being H & V). The speeds are 130mph & 149mph respectively. I dont do anything more than 80mph. Ususally stick to the speed limit. Would choosing either H or V tyre affect me?

Company Car & Personal Contribution
Hi There, I'm due to start a new job and will be getting a CC. I'll be making a 3% contribution. But I'm unsure how this impacts what tax I pay. Also I'll be getting a private fuel paid for, so I know that I'll have to pay tax on that. All the calculators online don't seem to handle personal contributions If I pay a…

I did have comprehensive insurance but it was only social domestic and pleasure use. The insurance company at the time let me drive home and then we cancelled the policy as they wouldn't cover…

Part of tree fallen on car at work
Today myself and about 5 others had parts of a tree fall down in the wind and caused lots of dents and scratches. The cars were parked in our allocated spacing, which is next to a river embankment which has several trees (probably around 60-80 feet high) overhanging the parking lot. The landlord of the site has asked us to…

New car woe - what to consider
So I went to pick up my new car yesterday from dealer. Been waiting for 3-4 months. Car was sitting waiting for me on arrival and on a quick inspection I noticed a few minor scuffs that I wanted fixing. As the salesman went to take it round to the valetting bay he has basically managed to corner too tightly and cave in the…

I receive £4K car allowance with my role and am currently driving an 07 Ford Focus with 130,000 miles on the clock, approx 30k a year on business miles. MK2 Focus & Astra H 1.6 oil usage
Those 2. From what i read there's not a lot in it between these two cars. Everything is pretty similar. Haven't actually sat in a MK2 Focus before but my mother owns a MK1 1.6 Focus. I know many rave about these (the MK1) but personally i think the interior & exterior is horrendous and the seats are just not comfortable at…

Ownership of Vehicle - hasn't changed
Hello everybody. I traded my car in as part of a new car purchase, but ended up returning the new car due to some issues. I now have my original vehicle back, but I am unsure what to do about the ownership side of things. The logbook I was given is still in my name, but I had advised the DVLA that the car had been sold to…

Car end of lease - how much fuel to leave in tank?
Hi, My 1st car lease coming to the end of the 2 years and handing it back soon. I can't see anywhere in the documentation of how much fuel we need to leave in the tank, presuming only need to leave a small amount in there so they can fill it up themselves? What do other people do? Thanks
