How does one acquire a broker?
Sorry might seem like a silly question but we're thinking of using one now! We just went direct with our bank when we first got our mortgage 4 years ago, we didn't shop around! How do you know whos good? Do you have to pay them upfront? Is it just a case of doing a google search?

Mortgage Rate Changes - When can we expect them to take place?
Hi all, I am a FTB who had an offer accepted last week and immediately went about organising a mortgage (actually did this before the offer was even successful). I had my initial appointment with Barclays on Monday, but my proper appointment isn't until next Wednesday 5th October, which is the earliest available. I am…

Mortgage Lending Criteria - High Street
When you go on websites for companies like Kensington, Kent Reliance (who I have a mortgage with) etc - there are clear "2 defaults accepted as long as under X figure, in 24 months, etc etc" Do you get guidelines as clear as this for high street lenders? I am re-mortgaging December next year and hadn't thought much about…

Paying off part of an Interest Only mortgage
Hi there, this is my first post so I hope it’s ok. We have an interest only mortgage with 13 years to go. We have Isa investments to help pay at the end. One company has said there will be a shortfall at the end. should we use the investments now to reduce the mortgage by 2/3rds, and pay a little extra each month, on top…

How do overpayments work?
Hi all, I've got an HSBC mortgage (technically 3 mortgages for the one home), and can't get my head around how overpayments work, so have two questions: 1) I've overpaid by 10% on all mortgages this year. I was expecting to see the remaining term reduced, but do my payments remain the same, and the amount of interest just…

Wanting to move - Lock in rate now?
I’ve been on a SVR for a while now as my deal ended as I want to move house as soon as I find somewhere suitable. I have the option of fixing a rate with my current lender and then porting the mortgage onto a new property.…

Credit Cards and remortgaging
Can anyone advise how credit cards affect remortgaging? My husband and I have 3 cards, all interest free. One is maxed to £3k, the other £1.5k out of £2k and the last £400 on a £5k limit. Why do we have all these cards you say - I like to buy things interest free and save the money in my bank to make interest. Also do not…

Remortgaging Early
Hi there, Newbie here. I’m looking for a bit of reassurance/advice, although I appreciate everything is a bit of a gamble. I have my home on a 65% LTV mortgage, which is in two parts, after we ported and then took out additional borrowing when we moved house almost two years ago. The smaller part of our mortgage is fixed…

Why the discrepancy ?
Mortgage was originally over 17 years - have 8 years left. If i plug my current interest rate ( 1.29 ) and balance ( 66,500 ) into MSE calc, it gives a monthly repayment of 730, but in fact my contracted payment is actually 803 ?!?! Is this because of previous overpayments ? I was plugging in various interest rates ( 4 / 5…

Remortgage options - what to do?
Hi all, I want to get some general opinions on my remortage situation as latest goings on in the UK economy have made me a little twitchy.
