Choosing a New Heating System
As someone trying to choose a new heating system, I’d like to run my thoughts past others to see where my research may have failed. We’re currently renovating a 1970s rural bungalow far from mains gas, but with an unshaded east-west alignment, tons of storage space, and land which produces some firewood. It’s a…

Flue thermometer
IMO this is actually making me waste fuel. I have had my aga little wenlock in since last Nov. No thermometer until this Sept. Last year we just burned at what felt comfortable temp (opened living room door when the room heated up to let the warmth upstairs) and had a tiny amount of soot from the sweep in Sept. All…

RECC complains successes?
Everyone who sells or installs renewables has to be a part of the Renewable Energy Consumer Code who among st other things deals with all complaints regarding renewables, and as we all know a lot of renewables have been miss sold with false performance figures, not sized correctly, the wrong equiptment etc etc. It would be…

I currently have a Horstmann 425 Diadem controller for heating & water and would like to upgrade to a digital controller with more provisions than I currently have but I'm confused by the current set-up. At present the selectors are interlocked but…

What size of gas boiler
Hi y'all, We are in the process of changing from oil to gas and therefore deciding what size of boiler is appropriate. The Worcester Bosch seems to be the model of choice, but I'm unsure if a 30 CDi or 40CDi would be best (not combi as we are keeping the current hot water tank).…

Infrared heating panel is no good
I looked for some real experiences of infrared heating. This is the best place to be.:T I bought a FAR infrared heating panel to try out. Has someone else had experience of them? It is advertised to say the best available but I am 100% dissatisfied. The infrared panel is not living up to the promise. May I be entitled to a…

Ovo energy
Did you know - Ovo energy never negotiate individually for a better deal so when they offer you a new contract what you see is what you buy if you click on the 'renew contract' they have a 'same price for all' policy so there is no point in ringing to get a better deal - what you see is 'order' or 'go elsewhere' Thanks :T

Boiler Flame Failure Lockout. (Fed Up!!)
I'm at my wits end! I have a five year old Potterton Performa ECO HE condensing boiler. I'm getting this dreadful constant intermittent red light and amber light both flashing. Red light means 'Flame Failure' and amber light means 'Burner On'. This means no central heating or DHW. It has a will of it's own. Sometimes it…

Lighting, replenishing and getting heat from smokeless fuel
Good Morning all It is miserable here in Cheshire, a really horrible grey day where everything looks damp and fed up and it makes me want a lovely warm fire. Out of wood at the moment - however, I am struggling with that too, but that is another story. Have a bag of Brazier smokeless coal in the garage, tried it last night…

Biomass Boilers Government Scheme
Has anyone recently had fitted or been quoted for the Biomsss boilers through the government RHI incentive which started in May? They came to our house and said it wasn't worth doing as our electricity costs were already low, so I asked them to visit my mum's house where they did a quote. The boiler is 18k, she would make…

Getting the most from my stove using smokeless
I have a Stovax Stockton 7 inset and have just started using smokeless fuel rather than wood. I am using Homefire smokeless and find it easy enough to light but I am struggling to get the stove up to a reasonable temperature. With wood I can get the stove up to about 400-450F but with smokeless I struggle to get over 300F.…

Opinions on fire baskets
Hi, just had my parkray taken out and gas installed, so am looking to fill the big gap where it was and was thinking of a fire basket. What are peoples thoughts and experiences of these? I suspect of course they are much less "efficient" than a fireback and certainly a stove but will they actually heat a big room (two…

What would you tell politicians about heating oil?
We're off to a roundtable discussion about heating oil - great news as we've felt for a long time this is an area with little attention. What would you tell politicians if you had the chance - about prices, regulation or the difficulties you face when buying oil?
