quote given then VAT added after work done
In two telephone conversations with a plumber my wife and I were both told the cost of the parts for our central heating boiler was £200 + postage of around £12. In the second conversation (which I was listening to) my wife asked if this included VAT -she was told this was included. The plumber is not VAT registered and…

£4.5k for new boiler!
Just had my boiler condemned, had British gas round and after alot of "surveying" he quoted me £4.5k. I nearly passed out in shock. That can't be right can it. I thought 2k max! Got a local bloke coming later I hope he's significantly cheaper! Is 4.5k fair or is he ripping me off.

Removal of gas fire
Hello there! Just wondering if any of you nice people had any idea how much it was to remove a gas fire? I already know how much it is to tidy up a fireplace and that business, it is just the actual removal of the gas fire and the work around capping/removing the gas supply that I'm interested in. If anybody has had this…

Quotes from hell
So we're doing extensive renovations on a house we've bought. I don't think I've got a leg to stand on with the legality (or otherwise) of these quotes, but I'd like to know whether I'm right to be annoyed. The total works add up to £50,000 when the project manager was told we had about 30k to play with. He, unfortunately,…

Loft Insulation for free...AND wall cavity??
Hi, My friend told me that he received a call last week from a company telling him he was entitled to free loft insulation and this person's company can do it for free. They also said that he could have his wall cavity filled but that that would cost him. They came to see him last week and checked his house out and said…

Hourly rate for a Handyman in Reading?
Hi, Just wondered if anyone could give me an idea of what a good rate is for a handyman in Reading? Have been quoted £20/hr to change a tap and have no idea if that's reasonable or not :) Also, if anyone knows anyone who might do it for less I'd love to hear from you! Thanks! Sue.

£400 a day?!
Hiya, I've got a quote for a significant extension conversion on my house. Materials all seem fair enough but he's quoting £400 a day for labour. That seems really rather high even with a cut for managing the inevitable subcontractors. This is for just shy of 90 days which sounds fair enough in terms of elapsed rather than…

Changing cost of work after contract signing
Hi! I'd like to ask the savvy on here about how to go about builders who quote a price for work, start the job, then realize its more than they had bargained for or its taking longer, the work is harder, and based on that want to ask for a price revision. We're having a bathroom redone and electric sockets and switches…
