£4.5k for new boiler!

Options
Just had my boiler condemned, had British gas round and after alot of "surveying" he quoted me £4.5k.
I nearly passed out in shock. That can't be right can it.
I thought 2k max!

Got a local bloke coming later I hope he's significantly cheaper!

Is 4.5k fair or is he ripping me off.

    Yes, agree with above.
I paid £3600 for a new boiler and moving all associated pipework, removing redundant hw tank and some other plumbing work also and that was the price inc vat.

Plumber told me what to order from the trade place and all I paid him directly was his costs.

£4.5k for a boiler and simple installation is taking the pee.
Unless specifically stated all posts by me are my own considered opinion.

Did BG actually condemn the old boiler as well? I would get a 2nd opinion from a local firm about whether replacement is definitely necessary. How old is the current boiler?

British gas did condemn the boiler, it's only 10 years old but it's a gulfstream 2000 and a quick search online shows its a pretty unreliable boiler and spare parts are no longer available since glenhill went bankrupt.
To be honest I'd rather live without a boiler than pay £4.5k!

lol no, weve just had a boiler fitted at work costing £1300 for boiler and labour to be fair it was a friend of the boss but its through business so not mates rates.

Removed old floor boiler, installed new wall mounted boiler moving pipes about 1-2mtrs to connect up.

British Gas charge way too much, ask your local guy and you'll see the difference in price between his quote and theirs.

Make sure you go for a Valiant or Worcester Bosch with a good guarantee from the builder who fits it.

£4,500.00 sounds like far too much to me. I recently bought a re-worked boiler (a brand new Ferroli boiler that had problems before it was ever sold, was fixed and now has a 5 year guarantee) for just £400 and our plumber fitted it on a day rate of £220 per day. (I would not recommend hiring someone on a day basis however as occasionally people will take advantage.) Fitting it and all the pipework etc took him a couple of days so all in all it came in at under £1000. This isn't the standard price as boilers normally cost more than £400 (I received trade quotes for normal, decent boilers between £650 - £1000) but still I think this indicates the £4500 quote is an absolute joke. I would highly recommend getting second, third and even fourth opinions (quotes). Quotes should always be free so the only thing it's costing is time. Good luck!

I have just had my boiler replaced with a condensing boiler. This involved some pipe work and flue alterations.

    Cost me £1800 all in

Not enough detail to comment on price but if you posted details of the BG quote i.e. specification and site requirements.... Btw, have a look here for what to expect in a quote etc.

Regarding boilers being condemned by a large energy supplier...Watchdog is running a story this Thursday.
