Best Way to Treat Mould?
Hi everybody, I recently bought a house which turns out that the seller had painted over a lot of mould to cover it up! Could anybody give me any advice on the best way to treat mould? And if I wanted to temporarily treat the mould by using a paint stripper (to get the coating that the seller put over it off!!), would…

Can you divide ceiling voids?
We’ve recently had a water leak from the bathroom, it’s ruined an old kitchen ceiling as per my other post (were not overly fussed about this as it was artexed and woodchip paper anyway) Some has run above the plasterboard ceiling and over the new lounge ceiling so we have watermarks to overpaint. Can you separate the void…

Replacment Fluorescent Tubes
I need to get a couple of replacement 5 foot tubes for the garage. Current ones have been in there for decades. Trouble is nobody states the measurement in feet only millimetres, which I find very confusing:( So does a tube measuring 1514 mm replace the old 5 foot one? Just want to be sure before I order. Thanks.

Solid wood bed
Can anyone recommend any retailers where I can purchase a contemporary bed made from solid wood rather than cheap MDF veneered wood? I'm based in the Midlands btw. I've stumbled upon Oak Furniture Land however the reviews on their customer services doesn't sound too good so I've currently got Get Laid Beds and Natural Bed…

Advice from a plasterer and/or electrician please!
Planning to change some hideous light fittings on my living room ceiling but also need to get the ceilings skimmed due to some delightful 80s fan decoration! What should I do first? Will light fittings have to come off for skimming anyway? Thanks

budget for new kitchen & new bathroom
I'm planning to do a complete refurbishment of my kitchen and bathroom in my flat and I'm trying to understand budget. I've initially planned £15K for both, but in speaking with my neighbours I realise that might be a bit too optimistic. I booked some local tradesmen to come and give me some quotes next week - using a…

Windows in extension
Our neighbours are building a side extension and the window placement doesn't seem right to me. We have only just moved in and the party wall agreement was agreed by the previous owners so I don't know what it said. They have installed velux windows at about a 45 degree angle, so we can see directly into their living room…

Bathroom wallpaper removal
Hi, We are removing wallpaper from a bathroom wall. There is paint behind the wallpaper and, behind that, plasterboard. I am sponging the wallpaper with hot water and scraping the paper off; it’s coming off pretty easily. But the wall is still a little tacky. How should I prepare the wall before painting it a different…

Deter burglars
Hi All, in the last couple of months, burglary (and car theft) has risen quite a bit, they've broken into a house just next to our neighbour and into the car of our neighbours. We don't live in a posh area, terraced 2-3 bedroom ex-council houses from the mid 1950ies. The road is busy during the day. We have a school, zebra…

Hi, We are looking at a house ( 3 bed detached, east Scotland) but it needs complete renovation and we have no idea of the costings (nothing flashy). It needs: - new kitchen (including wall knocking down to make kitchen-diner) - making a large cupboard into upstairs shower room (keep downstairs loo as is) - rewired - new…

Front door appears to have no lintel
Cavity walls are supposed to have a metal tray on which the bricks sit, but I can see no trace of it here. I need to replace the door and frame but it appears to be supporting the bricks and roof tiles, which weigh 6 kilograms each...

Shattered conservatory roof panel
We walked into our conservatory to find this today; https://www.dropbox.com/s/ypg291nn2lbegt2/IMG_2458.JPG?dl=0 I have no idea how it happened. There’s no obvious sign of impact or anything I can see up on the roof that looks like it fell on the roof. I suppose a bird could have dropped a stone but I can’t see one. It’s…

How to spruce up a wooden garden table set?
Hi there, My year old wooden garden table set is looking tired and faded as I don't have a shed to store it in over the winter months. Here is a picture of what it looks like (it wasn't that expensive).... I found the following bottle of danish oil under my kitchen sink. Would this be suitable to treat this type of table…

Can a terrace be created even with sloping 'floor'/roof?
This may be a very stupid question, so please bear with me. I live in a flat. Outside my bedroom window (arrow in the picture points to my window, photo taken from neighbouring room) is the sloping diagonal roof you see that belongs to the extension that juts out like a parallogram just below my bedroom window. Ignoring…

Replacing Sash Windows
Hello, New to this forum but looking for a very rough idea on how much it might cost to either upgrade existing sash windows to two bays in a large Victorian house, or to replace with a) wood option double glazed, or b) UPVC double glazed? I searched on google and found some great advice here but from 2010 so hoping to…

Low water pressure in boiler due to broken radiator
Good evening, after opening a radiator valve to release air inside, something went wrong and the water pressure reported on the boiler is always lower than normal. Perhaps broken radiator valve, I don't know. What could it be and how to solve it? Thank you
