Painting over latex walls
We bought a new place, and the bathrooms have this silk style paint. When we painted over it with emulsion. It just dripped and pealed off. Some one suggested we have old latex on walls. To paint over this should we just buy some latex? I don't fancy sanding to plaster?

Rear extension to double bay property
Hi all Hoping for some advice here as I have conflicting information from two builders. We are waiting for a quote from a 3rd but even so I don't think it will solve matters. We are in the process of purchasing (surveys this week) a 1950s semi detached house with double bays. We liked the rear bay windows as it increases…

Flakey paint in Kitchen & Installing new one
Hi all This may be obvious to some, but to a self admitted non DIY literate person like me, it's not. I have bought a new kitchen from B&Q which is being installed in a few weeks. We are having all the work done by B&Q, including installation, tiling, lighting etc etc. In my moneysaving mode, I am trying to minimise any…

Sealing gasp between wall and skirting
In the toilets of our village hall we have tile skirting boards and a a tough vinyl floor. There is a nasty gap between (between a quarter and half an inch) which is dirty and horrible. I want to seal it so that washing the floor will be easier. Grouting has been tried but it gets really grubby in no time. Can anyone…

Pipe under soffit
Hi All I am renting alate 1950s ex council concrete house. I have noticed a small pipe sticking under the soffit to the side of the house, just under the gutters. Can anyone tell me what it is? Broken Beko
Hi there, I'm new here and hoping you can help. I'm based in the U.K., and while I'm not a refrigeration engineer, I am a practical person and I hope to fix the problem myself with a little guidance. I have a Beko cool54fs fridge freezer which has stopped working, there is power as the lights come on and the freezer fan…

Tap connector isolator leaking on bottom fill cistern
Hi All, I was trying to replace a failing fill valve in my cistern, I got the old one out no problem, adjusted the new one, popped it in - carefully hand-tightened the nut - and as per the instructions - let the water back in to check the seal. It leaks (sprays) from the bottom of the metal nut that joins onto the plastic…

Advice needed re: Downstairs 4th Bedroom extension!!
Good evening all! I am new to this forum so apologies for my rambling! We cannot afford a 2-storey side extension unfortunately so we are looking at a more affordable alternative. This would be a ground floor side extension along with ensuite shower room/wc and a garage store to the front. Because we have had to amend our…

Bathroom lights
I am looking for a bathroom ceiling light, and I've had a look online. It's 10 years since I last bought one, and this was just a normal spotlight from B&Q. All the modern ones seem to have the bulb enclosed in glass or acrylic, which will make it harder to change the bulb in future. Is this some new regulation, or will I…

Damp around front door - with pics
Water is getting through my front door frame. I have recently had some plastering work done so the wet patches stick out like a sore thumb. (It was an issue before the plastering as the paint was flaking off) Now I was tempted to re paint externally the black paint around the bottom of the brickwork to make it watertight…

Neighbours SHOUTING - what can I do
Need some advice about my neighbours. They're nice enough people, but there are 4 of them in a tiny house, 2 boys and their parents. The whole family shouts at an insane volume whenever they're at home, the kids run around the street screaming, their mum stands in the street shouting, and the noise that's bleeding into…

Painting over marble fireplace - is it possible?
Hello, I am planning on painting the below wooden fireplace surround in a eggshell white (water based). Is it possible to paint over the green marble? I was wondering if I could use a product like owatrol esp to give the marble a key, and then paint over it in a light grey dulux wipeable matt emulsion, or possibly the same…

Radiator doesn't work
Hi My central heated bedroom radiator doesn't get hot, all others ok. I was thinking it would need bleeding. But I've never done it and can't find an outlet valve. There are 2 knobs either side. Right one is thermostatic, no idea what the left does, but has a cap covering it with a upward facing thing with a hole in the…

3m extension - architect or builder?
Hi as per my previous post, we are thinking of an extension on the back of the house (the whole width of the house) going out 3 metres. We have an existing conservatory which is about a third the width of the house. My questions are: Am I correct in thinking we don't need planning permission as it will only be 3m? Can we…

Can I use out-of-date cement if it's just for repointing?
I have most of a 25 kg bag of Portland cement left over from a project a couple of years ago. I need to repoint an old wall with a lime mortar, so what problems could there be in using it? Is it just a case of using a stronger mix?
