Natural paving / Indian flag sealer / colour enhancer for hearth. Black limestone
We've selected some black limestone natural indian paving slabs for our hearth. What i want is the deep black colour similar to when they're wet. Not the pasty grey dry look. I've been told i need to 'seal' them but with further looking in to it, i think i actually need a colour enhancer product, not a 'sealer'? But…

World Stores won't collect damaged crockery set
As per the title really. I bought a dinner service from World Stores which is damaged so I want to return it for a refund. World Stores say I need to send it back to them and that they won't arrange a courier to collect it as it isn't their policy. However, it weighs nearly 20kgs, is obviously fragile and I cannot…

Broken Gas Boiler
my gas boiler has had to be switched off as it is leaking water. It looks like I need a new boiler and I am unable to afford it. I have looked at a grant and I am not eligible for it, even as I am working tax credits. So, in the meanitme, I have an openplan living/dining/kitchen/utility room that I can keep warm using a…

Why magnolia
I liked my previous paint colour I had but the problem was it was really hard to find and repaint only a section spoilt by kids. I am inclined to get magnolia because it is most easily available paint in the country. Not that I don't like it but why magnolia seems to be a standard!

Dolphin shower
I have an old Dolphin shower (installed in the early 80s) which has been absolutely brilliant and still works well. It's the one with the oblong white case, mirror and large brown dial in the middle. For a while now there has been a constant drip from the shower head which I assume requires a new washer. Would it be easy…

Internal wall insulation
I am a DIY novice and want to install insulation backed plasterboard to an internal (outside) wall of the Victorian house I've just bought. I've looked on the net, and there's so much information, I'm bogged down before I start - eg size of battens, dew point (!) vapour etc. There is a damp patch on the chimney breast,…

Cleaning gas burners in oven?
Hope someone can give me some advice on this one! Christmas day culinary catastrophe! A dish of cauli cheese fell off the shelf in the oven and emptied itself all over the gas burners. Cleaned it as best I could but now the oven isn't heating properly. I cleaned the sensor as well but the flames are quite low and of…

Vinyl Flooring Adhesive
We're having Amtico tiles in our kitchen diner, and Karndean in the bathroom. Do we need to go for the brand-specific adhesive for each type, or would a generic vinyl adhesive be just as good?

Leaking joint in oil tank feed pipe - fixing tips?
Hi all, We have an oil tank which powers our central heating and water which has a feed pipe to the boiler which goes around the back of our garage. The pipe goes off at a 90 degree angle at one point so has an elbow joint to link both sections. Trouble is, one end of the joint has started to leak a bit of oil and is…

Sofa bed?
Will need to use it 1 or 2 times a week. Worth spending £1000 on a good one from DFS? Or a cheap? The good one had a memory foam mattress. Some others I found had pocket sprung mattresses which was nice as you could put a memory foam topper on top of them to make even more comfortable. Any suggestions?

Immersion Heaters .... Always Wondered....
It's been years, but I've always wondered what the answer to the following question would be: If you have an immersion heater that is full of water, a big tank in the cupboard - and - say it's not been used/turned on at all, ever, for, say, 2 years..... what's the state of the water inside it? Just one of those questions…

Builder damaged front door
Hi I asked a builder, who I sourced from Gumtree, to give me a quote on some building work around the house. All went well, he agreed to email the quote in the next few days. However, as he went to the front door, he pulled off the top door lock and it came off in his hand. He acknowledged the damage and said he'd run to…

New Step
Hi - we have had french doors put into our new home going outside The drop is slightly too high to the outside.
