Fitted wardrobes
Morning everyone, new to this forum having just bought my first house. Upon moving in to our 3 bedroom semi we have 3 decent sized bedrooms, the 2 smaller rooms were empty when we moved in and we have sinced turned one into a dressing room and the other into a spare room. My problem is with the largest bedroom which has…

Freestanding induction hob cooker with enamel lined oven
We're just about to get a new 60cm freestanding cooker. We'd like an induction hob. Most of the cookers with induction hobs also have catalytic or pyrolytic linings. I really dislike them, both from a cleaning perspective (as you still have to clean them, and it makes it harder) and from the scraping noise of the shelves…

My energy saving journey
DANGER - LONG POST Hi everyone! Overview: This is my first ever post on the forum (hopefully not my last ) :P and I plan on using this thread to voice my queries, ideas or purchases to save money on my bills. (I know nothing about home owning or energy saving other than what I've picked up on here!) Background: My…

Anyone used Auro (natural) paints?
Looking to paint several rooms in our house. Would rather avoid paints with MI in and Auro seems to tick the boxes. Painting over the original trade magnolia emulsion from when the house was built in 2002 with muted colours. Anybody got any experience of this stuff? Will it need more than 2 coats? It's not cheap! TIA

Is there a 'good' radiator brand?
Hi all Screwfix are offering discounts on Kudox radiators, but as I'm not sure of any preferred brands, I can't tell if these are a good deal. Is there something better value or more of a recommendation, please? Thanks in advance VB

Mains water pressure
It took me quite some Googling to find the UK mains water pressure standard. OFWAT's standard appears to be 0.7 bars. I have measured mine after buying a meter at Amazon. It's 2.2 bars. And I though my pressure was low. Does anyone know the realistic norm? The company must maintain a minimum pressure in the communication…

"Warm White" LED bulbs
I've bought some 'warm white' LED bulbs for the house. I originally bought cool white. The cool white are that - cool, cold looking, blue-ish. The 'warm' white though aren't really what i'd call warm. They're warmer than cool white but they're still a bit bright/cool looking. I got them from LED Hut & there's only 2…

Help! Painted new plaster, have a crack!
Hi All, So we had our ceiling re-skimmed last week, was done on Tuesday, the Plasterer said that it should turn salmony pink by the weekend and if it does we could paint it. So on Saturday I went to screwfix and purchased their very well reviewed 'new plaster paint' I gather it doesnt contain vinyl so the plaster can…

Is John Lewis Added Care worth it?
I'm looking at buying a new washing machine (mid-range Bosch) from John Lewis. They offer "Added Care" which is basically an extended warranty for 5 years for £95 and I'm tempted. My previous two washing machines (actually washer-dryers) both needed multiple repairs and I would have saved money if I'd spent the £95 up…

Replacing small panes of glass in ceiling lights
Hi there, I have some lantern ceiling lights made out of brass, really lovely lights but they are looking quite dated with the smoky glass panes. I want to replace them with clear panes but I am struggling to find any glass cut to size that is reasonably priced. I need 10 panes measuring 13.5cm x 19.8 cm original glass is…

Drilling in to concrete lintels?
I'm not sure if there's going to be anyone here who can answer this, but I'll ask anyway. I need to fit a curtain rail above some french doors, the opening is quite wide and I believe it has a concrete lintel above it (see picture below). Should I attempt to drill this? As you can see from the photo, I don't have the…

Plumber Call out charge - What's fair?
We own a holiday flat and a while back rainwater made its way in and deposited itself over the boiler. As a result it was constandly tripping the electrics. I isolated it, mopped up as much of the water as possible and left it. I honestly thought it was knackered. I call a local company that we've used once before and…

Energy saving bulbs dimmable
We have an energy saving bulb in the living room and we have a dimmer switch. It's too bright, it's 20W (Phillips tornado). Does anyone know whether we do need a dimmable bulb and what would happen if we use a non-dimmable energy saving bulb. Obviously non-dimmable bulbs are much cheaper.

Log store
Hi I have a log store that channels rain from the roof into the store. I think it's because the roof isn't angled enough for the rain to run off. Any ideas on how to solve this please? I thought about putting blocks under the base at the back but this would tilt the logs forward.

Pendant light - wire question
Hi All I thought changing a broken pendant holder in the toilet would be simple. 1. Buy a new pendant holder 2. Turn off the mains circuit. 3. check how it was original wired 4. Wire the new pendant in the same way 5. Turn on well I have failed at step 3 and confused. The pendant holder I want to remove has 3 terminals on…

Crack - cause for worry or not?
The ceiling in my bedroom has developed a crack across the middle. It is irregular rather than in a straight line and is hairline. I am on the ground floor of a small block of flats. Directly above my bedroom is the bedroom of the first floor flat, so it won't be water related (and there is no stain). There aren't any…

Pressure washers...
I want a pressure washer with a patio attachment to clean the large front & back gardens as the most & filth is becoming a hazard... Are they all pretty much the same quality in the cheaper arena (under £70)? I'm torn between buying a cheap one now so I can get started with the job, or wait to see if a brand like karcher…

Kitchen ISLAND - Ikea carcase/Granite
When we ordered our IKEA kitchen we informed the designer that we would like to have granite worktop installed. He replaced the usual carcase legs to stronger (metal) legs and ordered additional legs to be used for the support. Our kitchen ISLAN configuration is 800mm until (under mount sink), followed by 600mm…

any ideas for blinds etc for a slit window?
I have a 5ft wide window but has only a 9inch drop in the bedroom, any ideas on what would look best for a covering? I'm thinking most blinds would take up most of the space with the top housing of the blinds, so may look daft? I would like to have the covering inside the recess too.

Planning objection - loss of outlook
What exactly does loss of outlook mean? I'm going to put in an objection against a 2 storey side extension on the house opposite to make 5 bedroom house from a 3 bedroom. (The house is end of terrace, my house faces the flank wall). I've gone through the guidance for extensions on the council website and picked out what I…
