Kitchen ISLAND - Ikea carcase/Granite

When we ordered our IKEA kitchen we informed the designer that we would like to have granite worktop installed. He replaced the usual carcase legs to stronger (metal) legs and ordered additional legs to be used for the support.
Our kitchen ISLAN configuration is 800mm until (under mount sink), followed by 600mm (Dishwasher), then 200mm until (middle support for granite) then 600mm (Washing machine) and last another 800mm unit, total length 3Meter.
When ur granite installer came for template, he suggested that 300mm overhang (breakfast bar) is too much weight hence needs to trim overhang down by 25mm to 250mm, has he got a point?
Secondly we are unsure if the island just need to sit on the carcase, supported by additional/strong legs. We noticed thatr legs are not screwed to floor or anything and the installer said that the weight of the granite (gravity) will hold the island intact.
While we appreciate that it will be very heavy piece of granite but still have small concern that the island and wont tilt anything?
Do we have a reall concern or just worried for nothing?
Cheers

I wouldn't rely on just the legs to support the weight - as they attach to the lower 'bottom part' of the unit which is just cam and dowelled into the upright parts of the unit. The legs do overlap the upright panels a little but I'd still be looking to reinforce the whole bar by installing floor to top (of unit) full height end panels - that way there is a solid one-piece weight bearing from granite to floor.
Panels at the end of the run and either side of appliances would (imho) be sufficient.
Weight of the granite is immense and will hold everything in place especially when glued to tops of units/end support panels.
If you want belt and braces then attach end panels to floor with small angle brackets which will not be seen once kickboards in place.
300mm minus 25mm is not 250mm... I hope he templated your install with better accuracy
250mm is a 'safer' overhang, unless you've specified very thick granite.

Hi
Have you got a kitchen plan you could post on here? What is the overall size on the granite island top?
You haven't said whether there are units along the back of the island or if you are having side panels to the floor the full depth of the units plus the overhang.
Thanks

Russ, attention to detail eh!:rotfl:
When you say floor to top (of unit) full height end panels are you reffering to 'back panel', supplied by IKEA?

The size of the island was 3M x 900mm but now 3Mx850mm, 600mm taken by the appliance/units leaving the 250mm as overhand. Yes we have IKEA supplied the end panels as well as back panels.

Ok so you have just the units on the working side of the island and no units on the back of the island. I would say this is unstable, you would need side panels at least 25 mm thick from the floor to the underside of granite 850 mm deep to give stability. There is no way I would design a long narrow island like this without decent side panels the full depth of the worktop on each end.

I'm with CK on this one, wouldn't risk that size of over-hang without any support. So either full depth end panels at each end of the worktop or a couple of strategically positioned breakfast bar legs is the way forward...If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands
