Fitted wardrobes

Morning everyone, new to this forum having just bought my first house.
Upon moving in to our 3 bedroom semi we have 3 decent sized bedrooms, the 2 smaller rooms were empty when we moved in and we have sinced turned one into a dressing room and the other into a spare room.
My problem is with the largest bedroom which has built in wardrobes that look like they are from the 80's or even further back! They are in excellent condition but they are not to our taste, they are an off white/cream colour with gold trim and gold handles, a bit old fashioned! The inside of the wardrobes themselves are a bit tatty too, the carpet on the bottom is the old carpet from years back and the wall behind is wallpapered with a not very nice looking wallpaper.
My question is, are these easily removable? I'm toying with the idea of getting rid of the built in wardrobe and turning out bedroom into a larger room perhaps with just a few stand alone wardrobes but I am worried about the state of the wall behind the wardrobe, will it need re-plastering etc?
Hope you can help
Thanks

Depends how they're fixed to the wall, how easily the wallpaper comes off etc., so it would be difficult for anyone to say if you would need to replaster really. You would need new flooring, and to redecorate the whole room once you had removed them, so remember to factor that in.
You could always spruce them up a bit rather than taking them down. Pull up the old carpet inside and lay something else, repaper the back, paint the doors, and replace the handles with something more modern.0 -
We did this in our last house- the wall was fine, just a horrific raspberry pink colour. Fortunately they'd been put down over the carpet through the room0

Another option to consider might be to get a carpenter in to update them. So remove all trim. Replace all handles, locks and hinges. Add on any other new decoration you like. Then paint them up in a colour that goes with the room. They can probably look god again!0

Thanks for the replies!
I'm pretty confident the wall will be okay underneath as the wallpaper thats on only looks really thin and easy to come off.
Cheers
