Toilet base leaking a brown fluid!
But it's not the obvious stuff... Anyone able to advise me what it could be? It's only been a few days since it started, and appears to be appearing through the "grouting" (I'm not technical) but comes up as a brown fluid, like a rust colour. It might be that the toilet seat is sitting on a raised "wooden block" so the…

Party Wall Award
Hi all, Just a quick question on Party Wall Awards. We had a neighbour dissent to works we were going to carry out at our house. She appointed a surveyor and then we had one appointed for our side too. She caused so much disruption and used up so much of the surveyors time, that just her surveyor alone cost us £2500 (which…

To Screed or not to Screed?
Quick bit of advice, I am looking to lay some engineered wood flooring in our hallway, the house is approximately 4 years old and the concrete screed appears pretty level and is obviously sound and damp free. Would I bee advised to lay a self leveling compound first before underlay and then flooring or can I just put…

Loft Improvement
Hi I have a loft which is in a mess, I called a builder to come around and give idea as to how it can be used, he suggested that he can put insulation on the roof instead of it being on the floor which is where it is now and also put plaster board on the walls to make it neat and it can be used to store things, I dont…

EU to ban vacuum cleaners that work properly
The EU's green crusade is really going to hit home now. They are going to make it illegal to clean your home properly from next September, and put your life at risk if you have asthma, by banning powerful vacuum cleaners. I thought this was a wind up when I read it but it isn't. Funnily enough I bought a, soon to be…

Is it possible to have the whole house on electricity and cut out the gas supply? A property I have just purchased (and will need to gut out / redevelop) has economy 7 meters. I know that that gas per kilowatt is cheaper than electricity, but assuming you use some sort of advance immersion heater to heat the water in a…

strange non-leaking/leaking problem of my roof
Hi I have a strange problem with my new roof (just did it two years ago). It's perfectly ok no leakage at all when there is heavy rain and when temperature is warm (10+ degree). But I noticed in the last few winters and also today, that whenever there is frost, or when it is covered by snow, there are two spots in the room…

Combi Boiler Pressure too High
Hi I've just noticed that the pressure on my combi boiler is too high - it's at 3.4 bar. I've turned the system off for now. I will try and bleed the radiators when I get a radiator key (don't have.) Ideally, I'd like to try and avoid calling out an engineer if possible, as of course, they cost a fortune... I was slightly…

Tap help?
Hi guys Not sure if this is the right place, or even if it's something you can help with. I've saved up for months to replace my kitchen mixer tap. The hot water tap on the old one broke, so I've been having to boil the kettle to get hot water for about 2 years. I finally found a reasonably priced tap, and ordered it. I…

Hubby has made a comment saying our electric bill will soar with me using the microwave all the time. I bought it thinking it may cut the bill a little. does anyone know whay the cost comparison it?

Gas central heating question.
Can turning one radiator off reduce the heat output of other radiators? When I first moved into the property (social housing), the radiator in the kitchen was very close to the fridge freezer. So I contacted the landlord and asked if they could come and switch it off completely so my fridge wasn't battling against the heat…

Blocking a chimney
Hi everyone. There are a few threads on here about chimney balloons but I wanted some advice on an alternative. We have a very old house with a lovely large unused open fireplace in a bedroom. The chimney stack is large, at the smallest point it is still 1.1m x 0.3m so I would struggle to get a chimney balloon that fit.…
