Open day
Will be going to an open day tomorrow to view a property. I think it is a probate, the house is empty and no chain. I do not know what to expect, will there be like a bidding to the highest bidder. Do I offer the asking price if I like the house? Will appreciate some advice if anybody has got any experience on this!! Thanks

Legal House Problem?
Hi All, Hope this is in the right place. I bought a house (cash) with my partner, all the money for the purchasse came from me but as I had a house repossessed a few years ago, the house is just in his name. We made out wills so that if anything happened I would get the house etc. A year or so after buying we did get a…

Renting out a room - tax
Hi, I know you can earn roughly 5k a year tax free from renting out rooms in your house. However, at the moment I do 'host family' to foreign students to help with their English. This means the person pays a set amount each week and included in that is all their bills and food (similar to when a child starts working and…

Death and Taxes
The saying is really true. Nothing is certain but death and taxes. Anyway I've inherited a property which means I now owe two houses. The second property is empty and I've received the 2009/2010 council tax for this house. What discounts am I entitled to for this property? I've already used up my "unoccupied status" 12…

House Selling - Inheritance Question?
My partner’s mother died in December and the estate was left to her and her sister. The house is the main estate with £100k owed on the mortgage. Probate has been applied for and the house is on the market (even at rock bottom price it will clear the mortgage and incur a small amount of IHT). Obviously the market isn’t…

My local council is giving grants to council house and H/A tennants of up to £38K towards a property on the open market. How long does a sale take
I am seriously considering buying a desirable (empty) property for cash. (I am too old for a mortgage or loan). The cash is tied up in various investments which will take a little time to access. Am I correct in believing that the time to the exchange of contracts is about 4 weeks when a deposit of 10 -15% is paid? (This…

'How to Survive the Property Crisis', BBC UK Style 12pm
Anybody else watching this? It has the usual BBC daytime 'stars' - Dominic Littlewood, Kristian Digby, Martin from HUTH - showing us how to cope when we can't sell our house, our BTL's have tanked, being repo'ed etc. etc. Quite a lot of stating the flipping obvious, but some sad stories. Small bit today about a retired…
