Holiday from Work
My cousin works for a national company but he works in a locality where there is only him and one other person. They were both working for another company that was taken over by this current company under TUPE. When they worked for the previous company, if the colleague took annual leave they got someone in to cover but…

Self employed sole trader to partnership VAT
Hi I was hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction. I am a sole trader decorator and now need to become VAT registered because we broke the threshold. If we become VAT registered we will not earn enough to keep the business going. If we don't become VAT registered we break the law. Clearly we have to…

Started a part time job 2 weeks ago
After being out of work for 6 weeks I excepted a permanent part time position through an agency in an office as an admin assistant. It is only 20 hours a week, I'm unlikely to offered more and I really need to earn a full time wage. I saw the invoice from the agency at the end of last week (£840 inc VAT) and I now feel…

What careers could I get into that are well paid and don't require a degree?
I'm 26 and left the army (I was a chef) after 7 years. I'm now in civilian life living with a few friends in Birmingham and would like to learn/study for/qualify in/enter a new career. I have no real idea what, but I would like something with good earning potential in the future. As a guide I'd like to be earning in the…

What type of jobs would not require an interview or pay much attention to a CV?
I was looking over my CV again and it's so bare, and the majority of my qualifications were completed 5+ years ago. I was thinking about applying for basic/entry sales jobs, but would they all require interviews? I have sent off quite a few CVs in the past couple weeks to various companies, but nothing of positive note.…

Change in overtime policy question.
Just after some advice and opinions. I am seriously thinking about leaving my job for various reasons, being messed around, abusive customers, etc etc, but this is one that has really pushed me over the edge. However, I don't know if it's a breach of contract or if this can just be changed as and when with no formal…

Being underpaid at work, advice needed.
I started working full time in a kitchen for a large chain of pubs in the UK about 3 months ago. This friday I revieved a payslip for 21.90 hours worked, but I knew I had worked between 35 and 40 hours. I breifly told my pub manager who seemed very shocked and said she would fix the problem but it was too busy at the time…

Employer HR sabotaging my grievance
I raised a quite high profile grievance against my employer (which would shame them quite badly and cost them a hell of a lot in money to rectify as it actually affects many employees, not just myself). My union is appalled and on my side but my employer stubbornly rejects any wrongdoing. I had an initial hearing which was…

immigration issue
Not sure if this is the place to ask, but as peeps on here have been very helpful in the past, I thought I would pose the question. My friend is Lithuanian. He is currently over here working. His wife is Russian, who lives in Lithuania. Q. Does my friend's wife need a visa to come to the UK? Q. If she does not need a visa,…

P45 & Omitting Position
Hi all, I am currently at a company which I really don't like, and wish to make a move. Without going into too much detail, I believe I will get a bad reference or something else that may put-off a potential employer who asks for references. This isn't because of my performance (I've had a performance review and actually…

Giving notice when the office is closed?
I've got a new job and have to do corporate induction on the 25th January 2016 which lasts for 3 days. My present employer can be slightly 'nuts' and I don't know which way handing my notice in will go. Could be he sends me straight on garden leave as I deal with a lot of confidential information and I know I will be seen…

Making a shift pattern rota
Hi, has anyone got any experience making work rotas? Our department is under organisational change and our shift pattern is being looked at. There are 9 of us who cover 24/7. 2 of the weeks are spare to cover sickness/annual leave etc. Ideally we want to work longer days. Maybe three 12.5 shifts, or 4 long per week. We…

Is any job actually interesting or fun after a long time
I reckon that if they have to pay you to get you to do something, it can't be that great, otherwise they could use volunteers I can't think of one job or career that really is gripping enough to do just for the hell of it, even ones that seem initially interesting come across as boring after a long period of time
