Sick leave/new job
Can anyone tell me - do employers regularly check on sick leave of people they are about to hire? Do they often ask outright between interview and finalising contract, and how likely would it be to show up on a reference from a large company who tend to do 'xxx worked as a xxx from xxx to xxx' type of references?

Going Freelance / Self-Employed
A friend of mine has set up their own events business. They're not yet in a position to take on employees but every now and then they're going to need an extra pair of hands at certain events. As it's an area I'm experienced in we've discussed me helping out with this. My friend prefers that they pay me directly into my…

Leaving job without notice
Hi there, I currently work at a company which has treated me very unfairly in the past. A bit of background: they are young employers, who don't particularly have a clue what they are doing. For a period of about 6 months I was never getting paid on time, at one point I was owed 2 months wages. Apart from that they are…

At risk of losing job
I'm a bus driver with over 30 years service and at risk of losing my job. Cameras are watching us all the time, management are scrutinising our every move in order to find a flaw and on one occasion they did. I was drinking a cold cup of tea in the cab as I'd run out of water and there were no facilities in the bus station…

Hello everyone, I have recently started doing PC repair for elderly clients and even though I already have a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check with my main job, I was wondering if there's a way of getting one for my IT sideline? Advice for situation with friend at work
I'd be very grateful for advice about a situation with a friend at work. We're both in a large technical department but aren't in the same teams and don't share a manager. We've been working on a project together for about a year now but my friend isn't having a good time of it. I love the project and tried hard to sell my…

Confused about final payslip
Hi, I left my job on the 22nd July and received my final payslip via email from IRIS OpenPayslips today. My payslips list my monthly salary (£1424.50), bonus and overtime in the left hand column while the right hand column lists deductions (unpaid sickness, tax etc.) from that monthly salary. The left hand column on my…

'Put it on expenses'
I sometimes have to purchase things for work, but there is no petty cash or budget as such, so I am always told to 'put it on expenses'. I am not paid much to begin with and some months I am spending quite a bit. Last month I paid out over £100 of my own money. Of course I get it back but not until the end of the month…
