Pension and NI
Hello I have been told that I may be giving the tax man too much of my money and would like some advice please. I get an army pension of £500 per month and earn £25000 a year. I claim my pension tax free and the balance of my tax code goes against my salary. I am led to believe this is not as tax efficient with regards to…

Whats this tax code
I work in an office as a receptionist and am a basic rate tax payer. Nothing else to add to that so... my payslip shows me paying a tax code of 769L. Surely this should be 810L for this tax year 12/13. Any thoughts or advice on what 769L is. Thanks

Higher rate tax on interest from savings
Here's the situation - higher rate taxpayer for several years, just found out that interest on savings has to be explicitly declared to HMRC (must have been taxed at base rate, genuinely didn't realise the implications). Yes, I know - ignorance is no excuse. So, how to deal with this? Write directly to HMRC laying out the…

Self Employed - ish
Hey guys, I've had some super advise here before so thank you for that :) Today I have a hopefully quick question about my husband's tax situation (can't face phoning HMRC today!). My huband is employed and pays tax through PAYE as usual but he runs a evening class for which he gets paid (about £40 each week). We're keen…

Grandmother house tax band rise from D to G
Hi all, my Grandmother has just been informed that her council tax band is being upgraded from a D to a G. I was wondering whether anyone had tips on how to appeal as this seems pretty ridiculous to me? No work has been done on the house since 1991 so not sure of the reason (although admittedly D is quite low for what her…

New Tax Code and Bank Interest
Hi everyone I'm SE in a partnership, and with the new increased tax allowance coming into effect next month, if our taxable profits next year are similar to this year (business has been slow) we will be taken out of paying tax altogether. What I was wondering is - currently we pay tax (deducted at source) on any interest…

Council Tax Band challenge
Hi all, first post I'm trying to challenge my council tax band. My main challenge point (I think) is I bought my home in the same month as the house next door but one. We paid the same amount in June 2006 (£250,000 Essex), although my house is a 4bed 3 storey, and that one is a 3bed 2 storey. My main point is if we paid…

Tax situation with occasional work
Hello all, I retired at 60 with a private pension of about £12000. I don't yet get a State pension. I would like to do some occasional work (programming) for different companies who will no doubt want to pay me by cheque and also claim for my costs on their accounts. I only want to do the odd spell of work and don't really…

Tax dates and start up losses
Hi, I started a new sole trader business in Jan 2013. I made a small profit of £450 so far, not including the start up costs for the previous year (£570). My other income in this tax year was only £2500K. Is it possible to carry the whole lot forward as a loss of £120 in the next tax year? Will any of this be screwed up if…
