in Cutting tax
Hey guys,
I've had some super advise here before so thank you for that Today I have a hopefully quick question about my husband's tax situation (can't face phoning HMRC today!). My huband is employed and pays tax through PAYE as usual but he runs a evening class for which he gets paid (about £40 each week). We're keen to keep things above board, but we're a bit unsure if he will need to register as self employed for the sake of less than £200 a month's earnings (if we wanted to be picky we could off set the cost of his insurance against this and it would probably break even!). There's enough paper work in life without going through the whole rigmarole with HMRC unnecessarily - does he need to declare these earnings?
Thanks!

Yes needs to declare.
You can Register for self assessment online on hmrc website0 -
assuming the 40 is paid without deduction of tax then yes he needs to declare to HMRC
and yes he can offset allowable costs against the SE.0 -
One to check with his evening class employers: most academic institutions I've known treat everyone as employed by them and deduct tax accordingly.
So how is he paid for the evening class? Does he get a payslip? What tax code is on that, if he does? Oh, and who does he do the evening class for? If it's the local authority adult education service / FE college / similar then I'd be surprised if he wasn't getting a payslip. If it's a less formal employer - we have language classes running in various pubs and bars around here! - then maybe not.Signature removed for peace of mind0
