They giveth, and they taketh away
Grrr!!! My wife received a tax rebate of £1974 during this tax year (not sure which year it was for, she got a couple). We thought "great" and cashed the cheque. It's gone now. Today we received a letter saying she has underpaid by £2000 for the year 2010-11. The rebate of £1974 is shown as -1974 under the "tax paid"…

Limited company question
I've got a small limited company and am the only director and person in the company (ie no employees) and am not sure how to 'pay' myself, both for normal living expenses, but also to reduce the taxable company profit. I've tried to look at doing drawings or dividends but am not sure about that. I seem to remember reading…

Tax Rebate not paid - Help!
I'm wondering if someone can point me in the right direction. When I got my P60 back in May I noticed I'd paid too much tax, I'd been off sick for over 8 months last year due to a broken leg so I hadn't earned very much. When checking P60 I realised nothing was mentioned about a rebate so I got in touch with HMRC, it…

On-line Business start-up...
Hi. I am looking into starting up an on-line buisness but have absolutely no idea where to begin with such things as bank accounts being a sole trader, limited company etc. I don't want to go too much into it at the moment, but i will run it completely free of charge to begin with, with the exception of a caller privacy…

How do I revoke summons for nonpayment of council tax?
Is there anything I can do to make the council drop their summons for non-payment of council tax? First you think it's ridiculous as council tax charges are waived 100% for full-time students. I have called them to reason about it and they insist we (me and 2 other housemates who finished in September 2011) pay £70 as they…

HM Treasury get it wrong again! (ESC C16 withdrawal)
So, we have "entreprenneurs relief" where a small business owner can sell his business and only pay capital gains tax of 10% on it. This applies for gains of up to £5 million! For years, there's been a relief, known as ESC C16 where the owner(s) of a limited company can close down their company and take out remaining funds…

P800
Hi All, I've read a lot about the P800 letter, but can't find anything that relates to my circumstances. Most of the information I can find is where people have complicated tax circumstances (e.g. Company Car, Fuel, Pension, Multiple Jobs, etc). In my case I have just had one job for this period (infact the last 5 years)…

Most employees pay the right amount of tax, Do you?
Got this letter in the post this morning claiming to be from HMRC PAY AS YOU EARN. It's saying I may need to complete a self assessment if circumstances have changed. They have not. They seem concerned that I'm either paying too much tax or too little by the sounds of the letter. I'm on PAYE and my Tax Code is correct. I…

p11d cash equivalent for fuel
hi there, I was just going through my self assessment and was wondering if someone could explain how the "cash equivalent of fuel" on a p11d is calculated. Looking at my p11d the "cash equivalent of fuel for each car" is listed as £3240. I thought this looks like a lot! Going through my records I spent approx £2500 on fuel…
