What’s MSEers opinions on the pub round system of buying everyone in a group drinks?...as opposed to buying your own?

Depends how big the group is!

If large - split into rounds in smaller groups, or some will share a bottle of wine.

If small, yep, buy in rounds.

If one's not drinking, they can get their own if they don't want to be in the round.

Or if it's a big group, do a whip.

Obviously you could all queue up at the bar and buy your own, but I would consider that somewhat petty.

I don't do it as I like to buy my own drinks. If i'm only drinking a coke, I don't want to spend more than I should.

When we go out as a group to the pub we get a kitty going. If there is a designated driver then they don't contribute but get their drinks and pub grub from the kitty.

If someone doesn't want to join the kitty, then that is absolutely OK and they'll get their own but I can't remember the last time that happened.
Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it!!
  • Against it to be honest, especially when it's forced on you. I usually (attempt anyway) turn down people buying rounds for me. I was out with my new work mates not too long ago and was told it was "my turn". Obviously in that situation you feel slightly obliged but I did not want to buy everyone a drink as it was frankly something I did not want to spend my money on.

Also (my main team is based up North), every time we go out to eat they insist on rounding up tips. Fair enough, the entire meal is being paid for by the boss so a £10 tip is not a lot to give away but when you're in a position where if the meal wasn't going to be expensed, you would have simply gone home, putting people in the spot light to tip just seems wrong to me.

Drinking in rounds is a great way to get people to spend more and drink more than they really want to.

If it's just you and your mate then fine, but in a larger group it's a recipe for much drunken rowdiness and excess.

We meet several couples on a regular basis, sometimes there's just us & 1 couple or it might be as many as 6.

We all arrive at different times, we all drink at different speeds so rounds would be a nonsense for us.

It's a nightmare though when you're behind a crowd of girls out for the evening and they all order and pay for their own drinks.

Personally (tin hat now on!), I think it makes you look a bit tight / anti social, unless there is a valid reason, such as they aren't drinking.

I find a kitty works better than rounds, however.

Can be a touchy subject this, but there needs to be different rules for different groups.

Lads on a night out to get drunk, it's essential to be in rounds and drink at the speed of the quickest drinker. As onlyroz says, this ensures everyone 'has a great time' , even if it puts a few people under a bit of pressure lol.

In a small group, the round is finished and there's time for 1 more drink, and someone says 'Your round'. Very unfair and much awkwardness.

Then there's the issue of the drinks. One guy is drinking bitter, the other Magners, even having a kitty doesn't solve this one.

The super popular non money savers of course, just get on with it, buy the 1st and the last round and not lose any sleep over it.

If you're going to stress over it, buy your own, but be prepared to suffer the social consequences ;)

In the past I've either done a small round of 3-4 people (even in larger groups) or if im leaving early, just explained im staying only for 1 or 2 as I have x, y or z to do.

Mostly it's pints which are similar price (within 20p) so not a big deal to be social.
