Jaguar X type, good or bad?

Options
We are looking at buying an X - type. Ok, so running costs will not be cheap, but I already have a 3.1td 4x4. Those of you that drive them how do you find them? I believe they are based on a ford mondeo. I have a very good independent mechanic. I have been looking at 03 models with 60,000 miles. Will be chatting to mechanic on thursday when he services the 4x4, but would like as many opinions as poss! I assume they are reasonable to buy as not much of a market for large thirsty cars?!! I don't do massive milage but want something comfy and smart for the journey from south coast to midlands to visit family and to do our touring of the west country now and again. I would love a British marque too.

Jag on top, Ford Mondeo underneath....

People who bought them new, were fools. People who buy them 2nd hand are taking advantage of the fools ;)

Don't understand why you'd want 4x4, drinks more fuel, gives no advantage.

The x-type is about 20% MK3 Ford Mondeo (CD132 "world car" platform).

Mate's wife had two 2.5l V6 AWD X-types, 2006 and 2009 models, both purchased brand new.

Major problems with AWD transfer boxes - on the first Jag it lasted 30K miles (noise, vibration, oil leak) and was replaced under warranty, and with the second car the transfer box just disintegrated on a motorway (sparks, smoke, no drive) and then Jag tried the wear and tear excuse (different Jag garage) although only 45K miles.

We already have a 4x4 truck to pull a horse trailer (oldie but goody)!! The Jag would be our everyday car. I would not risk pulling 2 large horses and a ton of trailer with anything less than the Trooper, Also have to pull trailers about off road in delightful muddy conditions, so Troop must stay! :) Not looking for a 4x4 Jag.Unless thay are all 4x4? My mechanic is a 4x4 specialist so will pick his brains. Transfer box problems are commom with many 4x4 vehicles - will get under and have a good prod about!

It's hardly a Mondy - you can't get a 4x4 mondeo. Some common bits. The 2.2 diesel engine is meant to be good. Powers lots of other stuff.

Someone should tell Land Rover they've been doing it wrong all these years too. ;)

If you are looking at 2003 model you will either get petrol or possibly 2.0l diesel (2.2 d not released till a few years later).
I had a 2.0d 2004 and it was far superior to similar aged Mondeo, had this for 6 years before I let someone take advantage of me :) and had no problems with it at all.
As with any second hand car you will be at mercy of how previous owner(s) have treated the car.

    You can get a MK1 4x4 Mondeo.

No they didnt do a 4x4 MK3 Mondeo. But a few people have fitted the X-Type 4x4 system to a Mondeo and it fits.

Which, to be fair, isn't neccessarily a bad thing.

Some of the earlier ones are starting to show rust (can't work out if it's Jaguar rust or Ford rust, they've both been making it for years). Check all the electrics work and beware the 4x4's (classic ford chocolate transfer boxes at play), and there's some bargains to be had out there.

Transfer boxes are more of a worry here then on your Trooper because there's less of them about to get one off so they cost more (if you can find one), and they're by no means going to be as easy to change.

On the subject of large, ford-owned, well equipped and generally damn good cars that you can get for next to nothing second hand. The Volvo S80's also well worth a look for a big bargain.
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?
