Getting done over by the jobcentre !

So i have been unemployed for 7 months due to redundancy . I applied for a job at a nissan factory and i got the job and the money when/if i start will be great . The only problem is i finish work at 0030 hours and i have no way of getting home from work which is a 13 mile walk .

I have spoke to my jobcentre advisor and the best advice she gave me was you have no choice as to take this job whether you have to walk home or not and she also mentioned getting a taxi home at 25 quid a pop. This i cant afford to do as it would be 5 pound a day bus fare to get there then 25 a morning back 6 times a week .

I have asked the dole is there anyway of a short term loan or such as so i could buy cheap transport ie a car for 400 ect and they say i cant do that .
The problem i have now is they are saying that if i dont start this job on monday they are going to santion my jobseekers allowence for up to 6 months where do i stand or what can i do .

The obvious answer is a bicycle, at least until you've saved up enough money to buy that cheap car.
  • Just thinking along another line.. is there anyone else working at Nissan who will be working the same hours and might give you a lift? Desperate and probably rather simplistic suggestion. Or, obviously depending on how great the money will be could you somehow manage to save up enough moneyout of your earnings(while still paying £30 travel per day) for a certain period of time - not for ever - but just until you have enough to buy, tax, run and insure a car? Short term pain for a longer term gain?

I thought of that also forgot to mention though my journey home would be along the motorway so wouldnt be allowed on with a bicycle
  • Why dont you open a credit card and buy a cheap car £250 plus tax etc and pay it back before interest is charged??

Could you try to get a lift from a work mate. Ask HR if there is anyone passing your way and you could offer to share the petrol costs.

Hope you manage to find a way of getting home and well done on securing a new job.

    Good luck

Am so sorry to hear this, it's awful when for just a small amount of money you could be back on track.
Can you afford to tax and insure a car ? If so I would buy one from one of these car supermarket places at what ever rate of interest and pay it back as soon as possible or else bite the bullet and just get the taxi until you meet people going your way home and offer them £15 to drop you back. Put a notice up in the canteen, whatever it takes.
    Good luck

Would a cheap scooter be any good? Or would a friend with a car help out for a couple of weeks (say for half the cost of a taxi?)

And no alternative route? In my experience, motorways generally cover the same routes as other roads - they are just (sometimes) faster for cars,

If they can't afford to pay for transport to and from their place and work, how on earth are they to afford the cost of moving or renting a room? Jeez, I wonder if people actually live on this planet!
