The idea of adwords and landing pages are simple.... you simply ensure the page the person lands on is highly relevant for the search term they used.

Assuming your an ecommerce site of some description and your users come to you using highly "buying" search terms then you also streamline navigation to shorten the funnel to get their payment details as to avoid the risk of them coming to your site to buy X and then before buying X get distracted by the fact your site also says you sell Y and disappear off to a different part of the site and forget why they were there in the first place.

So in very simplistic terms, if you sold electrical goods and someone searched for "TV free delivery" you have a landing page that goes straight to your TV section with big banners highlighting free delivery. Alternatively if someone searched for "TV good customer service" you direct them to a landing page that also has the TV section but rather than banners highlighting free delivery instead have one saying how you've won XYZ awards for your service etc.

Most will divide people into 3 groups - those that know exactly what they want and want to buy it, those that want to buy and arent sure exactly what and those that are just researching. Your SEM/ SEO strategy should identify how you'll target each of these groups and in particular how your landing pages differentiate their content for the first two.

martindow & Inside have this spot on, the reason there are so many of these companies contacting businesses is that it's easy money for them.
Just had a call from someone claiming to be from Search Engine Easy wanting me to part with my hard earned to be on the first page of Google.

After letting him rant on for 10 minutes about the benefits he was going to provide for me I asked him why I would pay good money to be put on a page I am already on, he stuttered quite a bit, obviously that response was not in the script.

He said, "You didn't tell me you were already on the first page of Google", to which I replied that he should have done his homework then.

Sad to say, he then hung up, not the response I would expect from a reputable company.

There is no search engine optimisation in adwords and anyone can open an account and do it themselves, no big mystery, you pay to be on the first page of Google by bidding on keywords and then by paying when someone clicks on your link.

It doesn't guarauntee that whoever clicks on your link is actually looking for your products or services, in fact some of these companies have been accused of getting workers to click the links to use the money faster and free up keywords for the next unsuspecting fool, it doesn't guarauntee it will bring you more sales, the only thing guaraunteed with this sort of advertising is that your bank balance will be lower with little or nothing to show for it.

Remember what you and I see on Google is not the same - there is no 'first page', there is a 'first page for paddyrg' and a 'first page for xyz' etc which takes your previous browsing into account. My own website appears high up the first page for certain terms as I go to that site often. If you search the same terms my site may be on page 4-5.
