Is anyone else telly-free?

Some part of my satellite link, either the box or the cable or the dish or whatever has died. I can't afford to get it fixed for now (and no roof aerial) so was wondering if anyone else is telly free and can recommend some good radio programmes? I probably won't miss it that much except at certain times like when I'm preparing the evening meal which always goes better with a fix of the delish Alistair Appleton doing Escape to the country, or in the evenings after around 8 ish onwards when there seem to be some good things on tv and its dark outside. Even a sit down at lunch time with some sort of background chatter is good. Once the evenings are lighter longer it won't bother me.
What would you recommend? It would have to be terrestrial as I can't get digital.I've looked at listings but could do with recommendations.

With the terrible signal I get on my freeview sometimes I might as well be!
I was telly free for the first month I was in my flat. If you have internet you could always watch things online so you don't miss out on things you usually watch.
I used to listen to the radio quite often but would usually just stick with whatever station had the best signal! So sorry I can't recommend any programmes.
Or if you're just looking for background noise why not just put on a cd or something?0 -
Can't recommend any radio programmes, but you could do what i do and watch tv on your computer,as long as you have a tv licence!
I watch bbc, itv, ch4 and ch5!
Although I have a tv, I seldom watch it...just use my laptop!:)Less is more0 -

Thanks, I hadn't come across the Bottom Line. What are the podcasts?
I remember something called 'A small country living' years ago, I wonder if there's anything like that? It was really enjoyable.0 -

Thanks, I think you would need broadband for that which I can't get here. I've got a tv card thingie for my laptop but unfortunately it relies on a decent aerial signal which I can only get upstairs with it hanging out of the window. GRR, life in the country!!!!!!!!! I'll investigate the radio a bit more. Thanks anyway.0 -

Bottom Line is s Business Programme, with Evan Davies. Podcast directory here.
There are lots of plays and short series, several of which are about a general simpler life
DH and I plan to move to a smallholding in the next few years, and won;t be taking the TV; I much prefer the radio:rudolf: Sheep, pigs, hens and bees on our Teesdale smallholding :rudolf:0 -
No but I wish I was...;)
However I love listening to both Radio 2 and Radio 4. They have some fantastic programmes on.
Good luck...

Just to let you know that just before xmas we got fed up with our sky box not working so we rang sky up and they offered a replacement for some daft figure we couldn't afford so my husband said we wouldn't bother and would get freeview. They then put him through to someone else who offered skyplus for just £44 which we snapped their hand off and it came with a years warrenty.
There are threads on here where thay have offered this to some people and not others...but it's worth a try if you are missing your tv ...it worked for us0 -
I'm another avid Radio 4 listener. I turn it on in the kitchen at 6am and it's on all day when I'm in here. I even then listen to it as I'm reading in bed at night
I'd recommend Woman's Hour, You & Yours (a consumer type programme on every day at 12noon), The Today Programme (6am - 9am) full of topical news & interviews. In the evenings there are lots of funny sit coms, quizzes and plays. I also love listening to Gardeners Question Time which is on Wednesday's and repeated on Sunday afternoons.
Our Sky dish went haywire last week for 4 days and I was the only one who was not bored :rotfl: listening to my trusty little radio.0
