Received a letter stating I had stayed over the maximum limit of 1hr 20mins on the aldi retail park a few weeks ago. I admit I did stay longer than expeceted but had not read the signs thought it was unlimied time on bank holidays.
Should I pay the £50 they're asking for within 14 day or not?? Any advice/help would be appreciated.

No, just ignore any correspondence from them. It was a free car park so the parking company have not suffered any material loss. This is the only thing they can take you to the (civil) court for.
That £50 charge is tantamount to demanding money with menaces as it no way relates to the actual loss (zero) suffered by the supermarket. For one private individual (the parking company) to demand money from another private individual (you) is against the law.What part of "A whop bop-a-lu a whop bam boo" don't you understand?0 -
Thanks guys thats put my mind at ease however I was in the wrong so feel soley responsible to pay but I'm not for the simple fact of what your comments say so I will sit and wait until the letters stop arriving and hope for the best!!l0

They can take a while to stop so don't worry if you keep getting them, ever more threatening.
You can always come back on here again to have your resolved hardened.
If you feel you were in the wrong you can send me the money if you wish if that helps your conscience?0 -

How were you "in the wrong"? You used their free car park, and spent money in their shop(s). The only people in the wrong are the retailers, and the PPC scum they employ to give out these meaningless mickey mouse tickets. Never pay these parasites a penny.killahsmile wrote: »... You are not in the wrong. You have nothing to reproach yourself for.
You have been scammed. This is a growing scam and one that preys on people's lack of knowledge of the law. They can no more charge you than I can.

hang on, let me get this straight, you parked where you shouldn't, got caught out, and now you're bleating on here ... this is a money saving site, not for people who do what they like, when they like, and then attempt to wriggle out of it ... it's no wonder this country is screwed with people like you taking zero responsibility for your actions ... my advice, man up and pay up, though if you can't afford the £1 to park elsewhere I don't think you'll bother ... in fact, why don't you go the whole hog and park on other people's driveways, or on roundabouts, pavements, etc ... truly pathetic ... and as for you other pseudo-dogooders spilling advice like "it's a scam park where you like without fear of recourse, blah blah ..." again, revert to point one, ie it's no wonder the country's knackered ...0

Except that private citizens (i.e the parking company or the store) cannot impose unfair penalties on other private citizens. They parked in a free car-park, overstayed slightly and then are asked to pay £50. This would be deemed an unfair penalty because it bears no relation to the actual loss suffered by the land-owner. That's how the civil law works.
