Maybe the "EGR" valve should now be renamed the "Grrh" Valve!

Some similar issue. Passat 2008, 2.0 TDI, was driving it several months after got stalled while driving, engine just cut out and couldn't start it after. Called AA and we managed to start the engine after several times trying it. Right after turn it on, a huge amount of white smoke was coming from exhaust for about 2 min. Took it straight to VW Heritage in Bristol where they couldn't find any error codes at all. Was driving it again and same happened, took it back to that dealer and finally they are investigating it now followed by AA report (which says about EGR valve). The guy on the phone said that they'll try to arrange to reduce a cost, otherwise it'll be around £800 as 5.5 hours labour is needed which is £550 + part. Keep waiting for any updates from them. No error codes were found initially which seems to be very difficult for them to diagnose it with no faults displayed. Will keep you updated.

Update: VW have washed their hands of it. There is nothing they are willing to do to help.

You mean if you want you can pay £1400 and they'll do their job, no help at all?

Very disappointing from VW- Grrh (as I said earlier)!: looks like it is time to look around for an independent VW specialist to see if they can do the work cheaper (at least the labour cost should be lower).

Also worthwhile looking around for a 2nd hand EGR valve (try good old ebay) as that would be a lot cheaper - albeit with some risks!

Yes exactly. They've had the car for a week now and Tim the service manager at Johnsons VW in Birmingham has totally washed his hands of it. Even the case manager at VW Care has stated the "pot of money VW have set aside for this fault has now finsihed". We will see if this rings true should anyone else have this fault and they get goodwill. She (case manager) then states that we have no loyalty to the dealership either... Then she tells me that our car isn't one of the batch of cars with the faulty EGR valve, and that "customers need to take responsibility for their own cars otherwise VW, wouldn't be VW and would have gone bust ages ago". It's a total joke. Avoid Johnsons Birmingham VW like the plague - they are unwilling to do anything at all. I really wished we had taken the car to the Wolverhampton retailer.
I also asked how they came to the £1400 cost and she said that she'll find out for us. However, if we took the car somewhere else, we wouldn't be getting the VW quality of service (yeah looks like it). Also that if the part is out of stock that VW can extradite it from the factory. That is a load of rubbish too, after what I read in an earlier post where VW couldn't get the part but a local stockist could.
We've had it with VW now and will be getting the car repaired independently and then sold.

I didn't quiet understand this one ''Then she tells me that our car isn't one of the batch of cars with the faulty EGR valve'', it doesn't really make any sense tbh. I can't see what's the actual reason for not helping you with such high cost...I have my car currently in VW Heritage and still waiting for them to come back to me on any ''positive'' update. Called to VW Care this morning to raise a point and they've opened a new case and someone will do something and give me a call sometime after lol. Someone, sometimes, maybe...pffff

Yes, they'll happily take approx £1400 off us and fix the car. However they are unwilling to negotiate a better price at all (i.e £0 / x% off).

I'm now waiting for a call back from VW care to see how they arrived at the cost they gave to us. I know the genuine VW part cost is approx £300, so how they can charge nearly £1100 labour is beyond me. I'm sure the breakdown will include lots of rubbish that isn't needed.

Anyone reading this be very wary about buying a VW diesel car. Even the new ones have the same issue, however you may be covered under warranty if you've spent the best part of 20k on one. Unfortunately we purchased ours just out of warranty.

VW reliability is a myth! I've had a Honda civic that has now covered (wait for it...) 191k!! miles and has only ever asked for discs, pads and tyres.

Jap > German in this instance.

That is what she said. I also pointed her in the direction of this forum to prove my point that it was happening to a number of cars; all with different mileages and different ages. She replies that she can;t take anything off the internet and that VW have their own internal monitoring processes. I'm guessing she means the same processes that churn out faulty "batch produced" cars.

I'm sorry for ranting, but VW are really terrible. She talks about brand loyalty etc... I said I'd be willing to have my car serviced there at the same time as it is due one next month. Still nothing.

We will be collecting the car tomorrow morning from Johnsons VW in Birmingham and dropping it at our local Audi/VW specialist 'Central Audi VW' who are based just of the A38 in Birmingham. For anyone interested the price they have quoted to repair our car with genuine VW parts is £650 inc new genuine VW coolant, software update, full diagnostic test and report, wash and vac etc... How can there be such a huge difference in cost?
