The "client" is not specifically laid out as anyone but the subject of the letter is "Debt owed to UK Parking Control LTD" so I assume the client is ukpc?

OK, we'll take a look if you can post all the scans as a shared link to Dropbox, or similar.

    Hi there,

I am in a similar situation to people here. I went to a Costa Coffee on Ancoats St in Manchester in March 2017 as there is a "free" car park attached to it. It's actually shared with a hotel but I didn't realise that you have to park in the green bays for Costa. In any case, the signage wasn't clear as it simply said "COSTA FREE CAR PARK 2HRS" at the entrance, no mention of any bays (there was a small sign awkwardly placed just behind the entrance which no one in their right mind would stop to read). So I came out of Costa after about an hour and I had a parking charge notice. I ignored a few different letters and then I get I eventually get a Debt Recovery Plus letter for £160. In the meantime, I have written a letter to UKPC with clear pictures of the original sign (including pictures of the new sign as it's recently changed - funny that eh) and argued that it was completely misleading. I rung Debt Recovery Plus the other day to say that I'm disputing the charge but they said that it's out of the 28 days and they won't even entertain it. I wish I'd disputed it within the time period but, like many people, you think it won't go anywhere so you ignore.

So I'm not really sure what to do. I need to pay it by 13th June or face the nbext wrath of threats. The funny thing is that it's a free car park and it wasn't made clear at the start. I've paid parking fines before when I'm clearly in the wrong but I believe this isn't the case.

    Any advice? :j

I was also wondering if anyone knew the guidance around making reasonable attempts to pay debts? I can't afford to shell out £160 in one go but I heard that if you are making reasonable offers to pay in installments then they have to accept it. Thoughts guys? Thanks.

@Mark588. It's forum policy not to have more than one case per thread, but if you're at debt collector stage, you just ignore unless you get a Letter Before Claim (from the parking company or their Solicitors) or real court papers.

Please read the NEWBIES FAQ sticky, post #4 - that will explain everything about dealing with debt collectors, which includes the advice - NEVER PHONE A DEBT COLLECTOR (or PPC).
Please note, we are not a legal advice forum. I personally don't get involved in critiquing court case Defences/Witness Statements, so unable to help on that front. Please don't ask. .

I provide only my personal opinion, it is not a legal opinion, it is simply a personal one. I am not a lawyer.

Yeah I realised that about phoning after I'd done it! Oh well. If they hassle me, I'll just block their number. Am I right in thinking that Debt Recovery Plus is just debt collection and not bailiffs? It says bailiffs on their website but surely they would have to have something legally-binding to come to your house?!

Alleged debt collectors. It is not a debt until proven a court.

Bailiffs collect debts (ie confirmed by a court) which are over £600 and have been to the High Court and not the County Court.

Debt collectors who tell the truth and explain that to people tend to go bust as people see them for what they are - liars.

Correct, all they will do is send you letters. To instruct bailiffs you need to:
    1) Go to court
    2) Win
    3) Have the losing side not pay
    4) Go back to court to appoint bailiffs

You are nowhere near this stage yet. But as Unkomaas says, if you want more advice, please do start your own thread as it is one thread per person so as the regulars helping don't get confused and offer the wrong advice.

Simple answer about DRP .... THEY ARE JUNK debt collectors to
be completely ignored. They won't entertain it ?.... no problem but in return you won't entertain their rubbish.
What they will or won't do is completely irrelevant, they do know they are powerless and send out these mickey mouse comedy letters to scam people into paying money.
IN THE END only UKPC CAN GO FURTHER

DRP are being taken for a ride by the PPC's that use them

No success by DRP means they failed and they do not earn any money. The PPC do not pay them so DRP have wasted time and money for a ZERO return.
    The DRP website says
"We offer a 'no collection, no fee service', therefore our growth has been achieved by making successful collections, not by charging upfront fees.

Our fees can often be added to the outstanding Parking Charge rather than deducted from the outstanding amount, so you don't lose out.

Our focus is on collecting PCNs and not other types of debt unlike other debt recovery providers and our specialist, tenacious PCN team work purely in this area and are trained to the highest standard."

They actually mean "foot IN the door salesman" ... Highest Standard .. PIFFLE

And this is the odd ball they say
"There is not an excuse for non payment that we have not successfully dealt with."
They lie in their letters and on their website ???
WHAT about ignoring you DRP ... must be counted into your so called success rate don't you think ?

It is the scammer (the PPC) .... scamming the debt collector (DRP) who in turn scam the motorist.

These PPC's discovered that by using a 3rd party like DRP, they can chase people without any effort or cost to themselves

DRP are themselves being used and abused by the PPC's
