Hi
Just looking for any advice please I have cerebral palsy that affects my walking and balance. I am 33 and I am now struggling more with pain and walking distances.
I have never looked into claiming anything before but was wondering if I would be eligible for the mobility part of pip. I have sent off for a form but feel guilty as I have never asked for any help before. I have had multiple surgeries over the years but I have reached a point where my legs are constantly hurting and affecting my walking.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

There is no need to feel guilty tbh.
When you completed the form did you send any evidence with it as that would help.0 -
Hi
Thanks for your reply I have not received the form yet I am not sure what sort of evidence to send,0 -
You will need to gather as much medical evidence as you can find, but photocopy(just in case they get lost i.e. In the post) every thing that you send them as they will want to see the originals in which they will send them back to you.
Also see if you can get an appointment with the local cab (citizens advise bureau) advisor to help you complete the form.0 -
Hi Vicki,no need to feel guitly at all.
Most important thing is be open and honest on the form.
It is a horrible form, out of neccessity it forces you to think about what you can't do, rather than what you can. My advice would be sit down and get it over and done with as soon as possible (I put it off until the last date I could send it, so pot calling the kettle black here!)
For the mobility questions describe how you walk, how fast/slow, whether and when pain is an issue, what you need/do to help with walking.
You'll then probably be called for a face to face meeting and again need to describe and explain how you do things and what difficulties you have.
In terms of evidence, I actually didn't send any, but gave permission to contact people which worked fine for me. If you have anything with proof of diagnoses or surgery, OT or physio assessments that might help, but don't get strung up on evidence if you don't have any to hand.
Important to remember hte many horror stories you read online obscure the many of us who went through the process and foudn it relatively painless. Worst case scenario you're managing now you'll manage if you don't get anything from PIP, but it might make life easier if you do.
good luck0 -
oh and for questions that don't apply, just say so on the form0

Thank you for all your advice0

These are useful guides to completing the form:
https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/benefits/sick-or-disabled-people-and-carers/pip/help-with-your-pip-claim/fill-in-form/
http://www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/personal-independence-payment-pip
When you complete the form be aware of how the PIP points system works:
http://www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/personal-independence-payment-pip/pip-points-system
You need 8 points for an award of either component.
Re mobility. For an award you would be looking at:
1c. Can stand and then move unaided more than 20 metres but no more than 50 metres. 8 points.
This looks at how far you can walk before you need to stop because of significant discomfort.
The PIP assessment guide is helpful on this:
https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/547146/pip-assessment-guide.pdf Pages 86-135 are most relevant.
This is important "Considering reliability involves looking at whether the claimant can
complete the activity as described on the majority of days:
• Safely – in a manner unlikely to cause harm to themselves or to
another person, either during or after completion of the activity
• To an acceptable standard
• Repeatedly – able to repeat the activity as often as is reasonably
required
• In a reasonable time period – no more than twice as long as the
maximum period that a non-disabled person would normally
take to complete that activity."
Re The Daily Living activities
You may need aids and appliances to help you with some of the activities, for instance-
Rails or a shower seat in the bathroom to wash and bathe safely 2 points:
Something to hold onto to retain your balance when getting on / off the toilet / raised toilet seat 2 points;
Perching stool to sit down when preparing a simple meal 2 points;
or you may have difficulty preparing veg (peeling and choping).
Aid to help you dress / undress safely (grabber, long handled shoe horn etc) 2 points
Which would get you to 8 points and a standard DL award.Alice Holt Forest situated some 4 miles south of Farnham forms the most northerly gateway to the South Downs National Park.0 -

Thank you Alice for that information. I never knew that! So there are another 8 points that I missed working on.0 -

Never feel guilty about getting what you need or are entitled to claim. If your unfamiliar with form filling seek some advice from the CAB. Also it would help to have someone with you if you are called for an assessment.
If you are hoping / planning to use a Mobility award for a car then you may be eligible for a grant from Motability for a deposit or car adaptions.0 -
Please don't feel guilty (i think most of us do).. it is not your fault you are poorly and you deserve help.
Some 'illness/disease' charities have guides for filling the form in an dthey can be really helpful.. so you could start by looking at cerebral palsy charities.
I like the guide from the MS society its a free download and although not my disease/disability the information is really useful.
Remember when answerng the questions that to answer YES you need to be able to do that task;
Reliably - to an acceptable standard
Repeatedly - as often as necessary
safely - without harm
Timely -
So if you can do the task in the morning but not at end of day you still say No.
Get lots of help, ask questions and do your best.
I type my answers into word, put NI number, name and d.o.b on top and label question numbers. I then print some labels that say 'please see additional sheet page' (leaving a blank to biro in later) these are then put in the comments boxes. It saves a huge amount of writing, allows me to edit my answers as i remember something and means i can just edit the info for the renewals to up-date them when my time comes.
Evidence can be anything.. letters from specialists, a statement from someone who knows you.. they don't have to be a carer a friend can write something, A diary of symptoms and how they effect you, prescriptions, social work reports (if you have them). GP's can provide letters to support you although some charge, either way its worth making sure GP knows you are applying..you could send a quick letter in to them.
I hope it goes well for you0
