I recently bought quite an expensive pair of glasses from Boots and paid extra for thinner lenses. Very disappointed with them - they are way heavier than my previous ones, although the prescription has only changed very slightly - so I have left them in the cupboard. I did actually complain and go in an see the manager, who said they would send them off to have extra thin lenses fitted at no additional cost to me. When I got them back I couldn't see or feel any difference at all in the thickness and they weighed exactly the same.

As a result, I will never buy glasses from Boots again, but I will continue to have my eye test done there as they are definitely better for that.

Does anyone know who does the lightest lenses?
Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time

How exactly is a Boots' optician better than any other? Opticians are professionally qualified outwith the opticians that they work for, and even the smallest opticians now have such items as OCT scanners. If you are happy with Boots then that is your choice. I was happy with Specsavers for many years but I now support a local optician as it is easier for me to access them. I cannot say that I have noticed any difference in the quality of the sight and associated tests.

We get first class service from Tesco and good value as well, and usually free eye test.

Another vote for TESCO. At my latest test the optician mentioned a harmless problem with my eyes but insisted I be referred to a specialist "just in case". Specialist confirmed opticians diagnosis, much to my relief.
Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)

I don't like heavy specs either. I buy good quality lightweight frames separately (off Ebay, for example) and get them glazed by "reglazemyglasses". Despite having a low prescription I specify thinner lenses, not the thinnest, and have been very pleased with the result. They are barely thicker than the frame.

Hi, im new to this forum but hope you can help. I bought some new glasses from specsavers on july27th this year and when I picked them up the following week I didn't have time to get them checked out. As a contact lens wearer I was told I needed to wear them for an hour in the morning and then again at night. Apparently it would make all the difference to my corneas which have thickened slightly. I only really had time to go and get them checked last week and when I did last Thursday and went to the desk the girl flatly refused to let me see anyone even though they were very quiet. I also had a golden ticket to get half price on reading glasses but when I enquired she (same person) was quite off hand and just pointed to a shelf of frames. I thought I could just buy a pair to go over my contact lenses but she explained that they aren't like a supermarket pair and they need to be prescription ones and would need to be 250. I thought she meant that was the price, which although would have been extortionate , isn't inconceivable , to which she just sort of sneered and shook her head. By that time I had had enough and walked out. I left thinking it was my fault but when I got home and checked my receipt and customer care leaflet I found that I can have my glasses checked within 3 months of purchase, no quibble, no fuss. Should I go back and try again or go back to my old independent optician from 10 years ago?

Absolutely! I wouldn't go anywhere but my independent optician. They are more competitive than they used to be and you still get personal service, not fobbed off by office juniors at a national chain.

No go back to Specsavers and make a fuss. You have the paperwork- go in and say you are unimpressed and struggling with them due to contact lenses (even if that is not quite the case.)
Or go in and plead to their sympathy.
Either way let them sort it.
But you need to be quick as the golden voucher runs out very soon

Why would your independent help here?- they didn't sell the glasses

I have to say my local shop is brilliant but they are part of a franchise so it very much depends on who runs your local one.
They've tightened screws, mended arms and broken cases umpteen times!
Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything! --
    Many thanks

I am very frustrated. After each test the optician gives me some text to read using his testing glasses and it looks focused and immaculate. Then I get varicoceles that really do not work. Last time I spent £600 on lenses that were pretty hopeless in all applications. This time I spent £170 on a slightly changed prescription and they worked at distance but not for reading or computer. I bought some single vision glasses for reading from Spex4Less and they are perfect for reading, £29. I found an online converter that converts a reading prescription to a computer prescription and I have ordered, again about £29.
I have osteoarthritis in my hands so I speak my messages into a microphone using Dragon. Some people make "typos" but I often make "speakos".

I bet that doesn't help a great deal with your reading.

varicoceles = A varicocele is a collection of enlarged veins in the scrotum. It occurs next to and above one testicle or both testes.
