Money Moral Dilemma: How much rent should I pay my parents?

I've been Money Tipped!

This week's MoneySaver who wants advice asks...
I've moved back in with my parents while I save up to move abroad with my boyfriend. My mum thinks I should pay £50 a week but since my hours were reduced recently that would amount to almost half my wages. Is it fair to ask to pay less?

Unfortunately the MSE team can't always answer money moral dilemma questions as contributions are often emailed in or suggested in person. They are intended to be enjoyed as a point of debate and discussed at face value.

This weeks' dilemma originally came from the forum and has been summarised - see the original post.

  • Good God i would love to have that proportion of my wages left each month. Im a single parent of two, a teacher and somebody who lives with a chronic fatigue syndrome so i know the stress of trying to work. After tax (and my 6 year pay freeze (apart from one percent!) I have about 15 percent of my money left each month which has to pay for physio, prescriptions, children's clothes, social lives, dogs vet fees etc. £50 a month is what i was paying in rent 20 years ago. If you really object that much why don't you do regular high quality work for your parents home Ie maintenance, cleaning, gardening, car washing etc?

Yep, all 18 pages of it, less than 2 weeks ago, on this very board.

Brilliant idea to re-run it so soon, and with so much less detail.

Your wages have gone down, but does it cost your parents less to house and feed you? Thought not!
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

Why on earth run this as a dilemma,,when it's been explored already - and with a general consensus?

If you don't want to pay your parents £50 pw I'd look elsewhere and find out the going rate in your area. Best not tell your Mum though; she might do the same and put your rent up.

There is a lot more info on the original thread. Bottom line: in your current situation, with the restrictions you put on the time you feel you can work, you can't save. How much is your boyfriend saving for your future life together?
  • Our formula for our daughters was one third of their wages to me for bed and board, one third into savings and the final third was theirs to spend.
It worked well however much they earned

Are people really asking why this has been taken from a post hidden on another board within the vast MSE forum and highlighted as a moral dilemma in the weekly email which has exposure to millions of subscribers?

Look, if people dont like these dilemmas then please dont comment. The rest of us are bored of your whinging.
  • I'd love to be able to save money while someone else pays my expenses! Good heavens, £50 per week for rent, utilities, broadband, laundry, food and probably mum's / dad's taxi service as well, allowing the poster £50 to save, is such an amazing offer, I can hardly believe they've got the cheek to question it. Short answer - if you don't like it, just try living in the real world!!!!!!!!

I live with my BF, have done for a year. When I moved in his parents took us along to a lawyer & got me to sign to say that I wasn't entitled to any money etc from the house as he had paid the mortgage for 6 years. I understand this, but I did say that I will only pay the bills, nothing towards to mortgage. We calculated at the time that the bills came in at approx 200ish. It was agreed that I pay 200 a month & put £50 into a "food allowance" which he also does. I added an extra 10 when I got a lizard so now pay 210. We have since recalculated & the bills are now approx 310. I'm thinking of giving him more... what do you think?? Suggestions of amount would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance! Sez

Again, agree. I just don't see the point. It's been done to death already. I don't understand why they're repeated.

Erm ACTUALLY it was originally posted on THIS board... and only very recently. And the thread has already been discussed at length on here.

And people are entitled to comment whenever they like thank you very much, without someone scolding them for having the temerity to have an opinion!

And who pray tell, are 'the rest of us.' Name all the others who are bored with people complaining about old dilemmas being reposted on here by admin.
Proud to have lost over 3 stone (45 pounds,) in the past year! :j Now a size 14!
