Do you use a bowl? Go to the local hairdressing school or just let it all hang out? We'd love you to share your haircut cost-cutting tips

i usually try and go every 6 months or so as its permed so looks ok for a while until it looks like its dropping out. But for colours and the like I usually try and go somewhere that is cheap/free, same with cuts, as my theory is everyone has to learn somewhere, and if i benefit by my hair looking better and it being cheap then alls good :)

I cut my sons hair with clippers, done it so many times tat it gets so much easier. Started when he was a toddler, so he was too young to say he didnt like it. It started off as a number 2 all over, but it in diff layers now. But i do wonder when he will dislike me cutting his hair. Hubby cuts his own hair too, he likes to keep it short and a tand longer in the top.
But i have a daughter now, so i dreaded how to cut her hair neat enough. I found many vids on youtube about a product called the "CreaClip" Its basically a hair cutting guide which can be used on females and males. It looks so simple to use, tat you can use it to cut your own hair, and in layers if you like (helps if u have long hair) But sadly they are not sold over here. I found a copy one on Gumtree, but yet to test it out. Daughter is only 19 mths so hair not long enough to use it.

My mom use to go to the local college and have her hair done by the students there. It was either free of a few pounds. I just let my hair grow and only go to trim the ends if they are looking tired. I am glad i use a local place who charge reasonable prices. I also ask for a dry cut, which brings the price down a bit. I wash my hair an hour b4 my appointment. As i disliked the shampoo tat they used at the salon, and it adds extra time as well as extra pounds. Being a mommy i just want to get in there and out of there as soon as poss. I basically only go once or twice a year.

After a bad experience with a student at Toni & Guy (although I previously had an excellent haircut from a student elsewhere, but I don't live there any more), I've taken to using Groupon for cheap haircuts. My last one was very good, didn't turn me into a nervous wreck (as hairdressers often do!) and has said that I can come back again and be charged the Groupon price :D There's an £8 difference between the two. Think I know where I'll be going next time!

I have been going to the same hairdresser for years. They are a small independant one tucked down a back street in my town and they only charge me £14 a time for a wash/cut/treatment. I would say try steering clear of the big chains like Rush, T&G, Supercuts etc and find someone you can actually build a rapport with. I go once ever 3-4 months and never have had a complaint.

Many moons ago, I took an NVQ level 2 in hairdressing but realised quite quickly that it wasn't the career for me :o.

However, the training has saved me and my family a fortune over the last decade or so. I have always cut my childrens hair and used to do my Ex-hubby too (in fact I was so good at it that he asked me to continue when he got re-married but the new wife had a problem with that :rotfl:).

I have cut friends' hair and styled many an "up-do" for brides and bridesmaids. I trim my own fringe and ends, but draw the line at layering my own hair, so go to the Hairdressing school where I studied all that time ago and let some poor student have a go for a fiver!!

As someone who went grey early, I need to get my roots done every 5 weeks or so. Local salons quoted me in the region of £80 for this with a wash and blow dry - more if I wanted a cut as well. Instead, I go to the local college. The students are all really well-supervised and I can get my roots touched up, a few highlights, wash, head massage, cut and blowdry for about £15 - oh and a free cuppa too!!

I cut my own hair once a year after teaching myself from You Tube;) perfect results everytime and of course free:D, I do buy specific hairdressing scissors from Boots though, I also trim dds hair inbetween cuts which she has roughly every 6-8 months, we use very little or no heat on our hair so no splits ends or damage. I colour my hair every 3/4 weeks because of grey ususally with nice n easy which I buy from wherever its on offer.
Thank you for this site Martin
The time for change has come
    Good luck for the future

This could be me! I still cut my 3 teenage kids hair, as well as dh's. Like you, I only trim my fringe and ends. I usually look out for Groupon deals, or go to the local college for a discount cut. :)

I cut my own hair, and my OHs. I have long hair which I'm growing so cutting it is easy, and OH also has long hair so his is easy too :)
I did get specific hairdressing scissors for it.

As for colour, I'm growing it back in natural, grey streak and all, but I always coloured it myself too. I haven't been to a hairdresser in about....oh 6 years, apart from 2 occasions when someone got me a voucher. Both times were a disaster so I'm glad I can do my own!

I love having my hair played with, it's my one little luxury. However, when we were planning a family, my beloved ex said we wouldn't be able to afford for me to keep going to the hairdressers (I had a cut and blow dry maybe three times a year, he didn't know how reasonable I was!), so I went there as a model instead. I've carried on being a model for students ever since, so that's now 25 years. They've cut it, permed it, coloured it, sometimes just put it up. If it's been for an exam, it's been free. The local college is cheapest, but I prefer the atmosphere in a professional salon, so pay the extra £3 and have a cut and blow dry, with coffee, and massage chairs, for £8.00.

I've not had a bad experience in 25 years!
