What's this all about?

As part of this site's ethical stance, each year money is donated to charity. With nearly half a million pounds donated so far, it's MoneySavingExpert.com's way of giving back to users.

Two thirds of the money goes to support the debt & consumer education The MSE Charity; and the rest to charities nominated by site users.

What's the nominations process?
Please read the info carefully if you're nominating

STEP 1. You nominate (ends Friday 27 June 2008)

Any user of the site (which means anyone of course) can nominate a charity registered in the UK to receive the money. From this four charities will be picked.

How to nominate a charity
I'm sorry only UK registered charities are acceptable

i. Click Reply to this post... If you're not registered on the forum, which is different to signing up to the e-mail, you will have to do so. Of course it's totally free and your email is never used for anything else.

ii. Please include in your nomination.

a. The Official Name of the Charity.
b. A link to the Website of the Charity.
c. A desciption of no more than 8 words of the charity - this is crucial, its what will be used to describe the charity in the vote.
d. One paragaph only (max 150 words) of why this charity should be supported; whether that's for your personal reasons or more generally.

If a charity has already been nominated, please do not do so again, you can show your support by clicking the 'thank you' button for that post. To see if a charity has already been nominated please use the search this thread function just above this discussion thread remembering to spell the name correctly (otherwise it won't find it) or scroll down to the bottom of this post to see a list of some of the charities already nominated.

Also please, no other discussions in this thread, it is purely for nominating.

Whilst you may nominate as many charities as you choose, remember they will be shortlisted, so it makes life easier if you just nominate one.

STEP 2. Then a panel of regular Forum users will do a short-list

Five of the site's most regular users will be asked to short-list 12 charities from those nominated. The following are the criteria they will be asked to use when short listing.

• Relevance: Charities which are relevant to both the subject base and usership of MoneySavingExpert.com will be given priority.
• National and International: Roughly two thirds of the selection should be UK based charities and one third overseas/international.
• Six larger and six smaller. To ensure some smaller charities where the money really makes a difference are included, there will be six large and small charities.
• Popularity. If you support a charity nominated below, then Thank it (you need to be logged in to do this), to indicate you support it. While not binding, this will be looked at in the decision process.

From previous years I know much soul searching goes into this job, and a lot of care is taken. Its not easy with so many worthy causes, so let me thank the volunteers in advance, and I hope all nominators will realise how difficult the choice is.

One charity is already pre-selected (five charity get the money, four are voted for). Re-cyle (fighting poverty with affordable transport) is very small and something I've been involved in since the early days. As such its been part of the charity fund since the beginning and it relies on the cash.

So I hope you'll understand why I give it an automatic birth, the money is a lifeline to it. To see previous years charities visit the The MSE Charity Fund page.

STEP 3. There's a site wide vote from the short-list

After that there will be a site vote announced in the weekly e-mail to select the charities from the selected short-list. The top two big and two small charities will then each be given 20% of the total money available (ie 20% of a third of the entire fund). The winners will be announced in the weekly e-mail.

d. Cancer is one of the biggest killers and yet there is still so much that the world doesn't know about it. We need to find cures and learn more about it to be able to help those affected and their families. Personally I am a massive supporter of Cancer Research UK as my own mum died from Lung cancer in 2005 after a long hard struggle with it. Watching her be taken away in such a cruel and inhumane and spurred me on to do anything and everything I can to help others not have to go through the same fate.

d) Woodlands Hospice provides an amazing service for cancer sufferers and their families. They provide emotional and physical support, and do not get as much publicity as some of the larger charities. Personally, they looked after my best mate's wife when she died from breast cancer. The way they looked after her, him and their 2 kids blew me away. They are amazong people.

d. We mainly care for people with cancer but we also care for people with other life limiting illnesses. Our services are always free of charge to patients and their families, which means that in 2007-08, we will need to raise more than £115 million.

I've worked for them for 15 years, nursing and now research, and have no plans to ever work elsewhere.

My Mum recently died in our local hospice and the support shown when you're on the other side of things is as amazing as I knew it would be.

d) PDSA is the UK's leading veterinary charity, caring for more than 320,000 pet patients belonging to people in need. It provide free vetinary treatment to sick and injured animals and promotes responsible pet ownership. Personally its my supported charity as it ensures an option for those who cant afford the treatment and means that pets dont miss out on vital care and treatment.

Know someone who died age 7 from Meningitis suddenly overnight, so personal. They also don't seem to advertise on google (spending donated money) or advertise via other means, which is all taken from donaters money. Something which I hate with charities.

3. Information & support for young people/children with hemiplegia

4. HemiHelp was formed in 1990 to offer information and support to children and young people with hemiplegia, to their families or carers and to the professionals who work with them and to increase general awareness of the condition. Childhood hemiplegia is a condition, similar to cerebral palsy, affecting one side of the body. It is caused by damage to some part of the brain. The effects are similar to that of a stroke and it affects around one child in a 1,000. The charity has grown over the years but is very 'family orientated'. It was formed by parents to support each other and they need all the help they can get to raise awareness and give support to their members.

c) Bureau dedicated to providing free, non-judgemental advice.
d) The citizens advice bureau provides a crucial service, offering free, non-judgemental, impartial advice which is accessable to everyone. Advice is given through one-to-one meetings, emails, citizilink or telephone calls. Some bureaus will visit clients home depending on staff numbers and funding. Sadly the CAB have seen their funding withdrawn and it being offered to profit making legal companies instead. The CAB needs to have an injection of funds to be able to keep up with the demand and to be able to employ more debt and welfare workers. A worthy cause!

d) This charity is based on the Wirral but provides individual packages of support over the UK. It has recently launched its Home from Home appeal to construct the only purpose build, autism specific respite service in the North West to support the many hundreds of families who have to cope daily with the stress of caring for someone with autism 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
This vital resource will cost £1.3m.

d. I hadn't realised until Terry Pratchett's publicity about how little goes into Alzheimers research (per sufferer) compared to something like cancer (about ten times as much or something per sufferer).
Edit: Found the appropriate figures, it's even worse than I remembered: "Alzheimer's effects 700,000 people in the UK but only £11 is spent for each person every year on research, compared to £289 for each cancer patient." From sky news article.

The Salvation Army also supports the work of the emergency services by providing refreshments, shelter and counselling at major incidents. This has included the 7th July London bombings, the devastating hurricanes in Southern USA, and the severe floods in Carlisle and Boscastle.

this is a cause close to my heart, i lost my nanna to cancer just over a year ago and she was cared for a great deal by the amazing staff at the hospice. also my friend lost her father to a brain tumour and he was cared for in the last month of his life by these wonderful people. it must be such a difficult and emotional job to do, but the people that work in these places truly give their hearts as well as their time and allow patients to live and pass away in as little pain as possible and with dignity.

Friends Of Animals League (FOAL)

Animal rescue, sanctuary and rehoming centre

FOAL Farm is based in Biggin Hill and its aim is to take in as many sick, distressed and unwanted animals as possible and restore them to health and happiness. They are then placed in good (vetted) homes. No healthy animal is ever destroyed, and if no home can be found the animal becomes a resident for the rest of its life at Foal farm.

FOAL's resident animals include cats, horses, ponies, donkeys, goats, sheep and chickens. They also look after dogs and small animals among many others. There are approximately 300 - 400 animals at FOAL at any one time. They rely entirely on voluntary donations.

& vivisection (cutting while conscious)

Despite more money being spent on cancer than ever before more people are dying than even before. Even with the manipulation of the survival figures.
