Hi Bertiebots,
I made food hampers and did knitting last year, and managed to go 'cash neutral' of which I was dead proud.
We made:
dark chocolate sauce for ice cream
apple cheese
herby olive oil
green tomato chutney,
caramelised onion relish
chilli jam
and a few other things I can't quite remember now!!!
About starting early, it's meant that I'm growing my own toms, so that the green end of season ones can be used for more of the successful chutney, and I'm not going to leave collecting jars and hampers so late this year.
Hope that helps...
Weezl x

Special Occassions Board is full of ideas. I left it too late last year to do christmas baskets but started after Christmas.........haunted the charity shops for 'unwanted' gifts, still wrapped, got them at a bargain price so I've nearly got enough now to cover birthdays and christmas.Limited myself to a budget of £5-£6 a basket -went over that earlier this year but have made up for it by some baskets of stuff coming under that amount.
I know it seems daft to plan for Christmas so far ahead but I'm trying to avoid the stress of making a little money go even further later on this year when it looks like prices of essentials are on the up.
I just got a few bits each week depending on what there was and to be honest I've hardly noticed the cost.
But organised I'm not (apart from noting down what I bought and how much).........if you saw my spare room..................:eek:Mary
I'm creative -you can't expect me to be neat too !

Weezl do you have the recipe for caramelised onion relish? I've been looking unsuccesfully for a recipe that keeps well for ages and would love to make some. Thanks very much in advance if you can help!

I did baskets last year. Not sure if I'm doing them this year.
Have bought BIL pressie already. Book and DVD on horse racing in Morrisons last week. £4.99. He's a horse racing nut, so he should like it!
Also bought after Xmas my new grandchild (due 8/7/08) a first Christmas Teddy LOL!
Go on, tell me I'm mad........I Believe in saving money!!!:T

Hi bertiebots,
As others have said you should get lots of ideas on the Special Occasions and Celebrations board so I've moved your thread across to see if you can get more replies.

Last Christmas I bought presents for the kids and hubby and everyone else had homemade pressie - everyone really loved them. I have a couple of relatives that I thought might have been annoyed as they had spent money on gifts for us but everyone was really pleased with their goodies!
I made Christmas puddings for adults, chocolate brownie kits for kids and everyone got shortbread christmas trees, peanut butter cups and my daughter made saltdough christmas tree decorations.
I got nearly all the recipes from here - I'll try to post links later.
This year I'm going to do the same plus some jars of stuff - I'm thinking onion relish, HM barnston pickle type stuff, jam and maybe lemon curd.
I really enjoyed making it all last year and am planning to do it with a few friends this year so that we can meet once a week and all make a huge batch of something and have a gossip/laugh/bottle of wine at the same time! I'm going to call it our 'Green Christmas Countdown'!
I asked at church at the beginning of the year for people to save jars with lids for me and I now have a shed full of them - so it's worth asking friends/family to save jars and things for you now.0
