New paypal account help pls

Options
I just bid on an item, I didn't see when I was looking at it earlier in the week "paypal only" I only saw "seller prefers paypal"

I thought I would offer a cheque as my preferred method of payment, as I always have before.

But after winning I see "paypal only" so I thought I'd open a paypal account in order to comply with seller - how hard can it be?

Anyway I have succesfully opened an account with a balance of 0.00

Now I thought I'd top it up with my credit/debit card. So I clicked on "Add Funds". There is only one option given:
Transfer Funds From a Bank Account in the United Kingdom 7 - 9 working days!

Where is the option to add a credit card? from which I can credit my account immediately?

Please help. Before my seller contacts me and doesn't like what I have to tell him....."Would you like a Cheque?"

If your account is set up, you don't have to transfer money to the account. Just click 'Pay now' on your invoice.

Your account should be zero. On my buying Paypal account the balance is zero because nobody has paid me for anything.

If you have set up an account like you said, just click the pay now tab and follow the instructions. Alternatively, on the Paypal page, click 'send money' and do it that way.

When you pay, the money will go from your card to the sellers account.

You don't load the account to pay sellers, Paypal automatically take it from your card to pay them.

Did you set the account up with your CC or debit card? Whichever one you used, that is where the money will come from to pay the sellers.

You should be able to register your card with them when you make the payment. In this case, you should treat Paypal as just a vehicle for making CC payments, not as an account from which funds are sent.

Edit: Looks like I wasn't quick enough off the mark ;)

Ok, so when I click make payment from my ebay for the item I won, it should go through procedures to ask how I wish to pay, and at that point it will ask me for my credit card details.

Ok I'll have a go, got to ask seller to confirm amount first though. Ok thanks you two.

So paypal- personal account - is completely free to buy/sell things with? It says paypal is free to withdraw money above 50 pounds.
Can you sell stuff using a personal account?
What is stop you selling stuff using a personal account?

So the only people who pay are premier/business accounts ?

You may have to wait while they verify your details (after all you could be using anyones card). If this is the case, let your seller know, so they don't think you have stalled on the transaction.

A personal account is free for buyers and is free for sellers, but a seller can only accept a payment from a buyers funds in this case, ie, a balance in their paypal account. They cannot be paid from anyone wanting to use a CC or debit card.

The 'Paypal is free to withdraw money above £50' is for sellers. If I have a balance of under £50 and I want to withdraw it to my bank, Paypal will charge me. If I have a balance of £50 or over, it is free to withdraw it.

Many sellers have premier accounts as it means buyers can pay with funds or cards, but the only downside to this is when you upgrade to a premier account, to accept funds, Paypal will charge you (even though if you have a personal account, they don't).

Sorry if this sounds confusing by the way! :)

If you only want to keep a basic account for selling then you can't tick the 'I accept paypal' in the payment listings, all you can do is mention in your listings somewhere that you will take paypal as long as the buyer only uses a straight paypal balance transfer. I think you can also take paypal payments funded via a direct transfer from a bank account but that will convert to an echeque and you'll need to wait about 10-12 working days for it to clear.

It is very difficult to sell on ebay using a basic account, but it can be done if you can put up with the hassle.

Yep, the moment you upgrade to a premier (some people call these selling accounts) you will pay a fee on all payments received into that account.

How do I know if my seller has a premier account? Just by the fact that the listing allowed him to say
    Payment methods accepted
    This seller, the*edited*er, prefers PayPal.
    ?

The seller informed me by email postage would be 2.00 should I just pay now 2.00 + 1.20 = 3.20 or should I "request a total"?

Update: I just requested a total.

Ask seller for an invoice, just so you have a record on e-Bay of what the costs are.

If a seller displays the Paypal logos/this seller prefers Paypal line, then they can accept card payments.

A seller who only has a personal account cannot use the Paypal logos, but what they can do is put a little line in the listing saying they can accept Paypal but only from funds.

Soo, YES you can have Paypal payments funded directly from your bank account but NO this does not equate to an echeque in my experience.
    I believe what happens is
    1. The seller gets an instant payment, with status "completed" in Paypal (for echeques, the status will be 'pending' until actual payment is credited to the seller's Paypal account - - 9 working days for UK-bank transactions, 5 or 6 for US-bank transactions, in my experience)
    2. both, the buyer's and the seller's, Paypal accounts show the transaction as 'completed' (which is very misleading on the buyer's account because.........)
    3. ....the debit of the buyer's bank account will take a few days. Not 7-9, though - - direct debits clear much faster, some 3-4 days at the max.
