We've Got Mice-Help!!! (merged threads)

Evening!

How do we get rid of mice? We have a utility room and have noticed the last few weeks that our spuds have been chewed on and mice droppings  Hubby has put traps down and weve been cleaning the cupboard out etc.

Anyway, sat here minding my own business and one has just run across my hallway (or im seeing things!). How do we get rid of them? Why have we got them? Our house is spotless! Will they go upstairs? I am now petrified! I am disabled and cant move very fast. I know it all sounds stupid and pathetic but dont know what to do.

What can we get to get rid of them? The traps were obviously rubbish-can we get better ones. We dont have alot of money-so money saving is important. We are with a Housing Association-will they be able to help?

God...Im shaking

Help!!!!!!!

Penny-Pincher!!

    Get on a chair!

Ok seriously, if your place is rented from a housing association, make them your first port of call. They should send someone out to deal with this kind of thing. At the very least they could supply traps.

I do know that our local H.A will deal with this type of problem.

If you are with a housing association they will help. You should have an emergency number, this will give you some one who will arrange for the pest control person to call round as soon as possible and make arrangements to terminate the little blighters.

Making some irregular noises is a good idea as they are more scarred of you than you are of them.

Can you "borrow" a cat for a short time as the smell of the cat alone will deter them?

Most of all, stay calm, they are more interested in potential food than in getting anywhere near you.:hello:

Phone the environmental health department. They send someone round to leave poison. Make sure it is definately mice though before you phone them - you look a bit foolish when it turns out to be burnt toast scrapings that other half hasn't swept up!!

This from my local councils site - I'm fairly sure it's typical of most.

"Frequently Asked Questions Environment > Pests > Pest control

I have a rat / mouse / insect / bird etc. I think I need pest control. What can I do?

The Pest Control service in Environmental Services can treat all sorts of pests and give advice on self help and can be contacted on

If you are a council tenant contact your local housing office as they need to place an order for you"

we too have had mice in the past and as we can't get a cat we put down traps and found that cheese didnt work as bait but bread with a bit of peanut butter worked a treat. Try that this evening it may work.

i was once sat watching tv and saw a little mouse run behind my tv  i didnt stop shaking for a week.
  • easy set mouse trap I find this type of mouse trap the easiest to set. If you can't find the pre baited type I use peanut butter and that works a treat.
Meant to say you can get similar to this type cheaper from Wilkinsons or Boyes

    They like to eat soap!

Seriously, when i was a kid I had a soap collection and when we moved we put all our stuff in an empty house that my grandad owned.

The mice had been in and left most things untouched - but they had scoffed all my soap!!!

Then you have the added advantage of nice smelling mouse droppings!! :rotfl:

Yeah, mice don't like cheese, and I've seen peanut butter mentioned...

..in the wild mice eat grain and cereals - so rice works, muesli...

Don't get yourself a cat or it will bring more of the sodding things in and let them loose under the freezer..........can you tell i'm speaking from experience????

My youngest cat's been guarding the freezer all day waiting to bash it when it comes out - i've stuck a humain trap down....will see what happens over night.

Pulled the freezer out to have a look earlier - he stuck his little head out of the freezer gubbins - he'd got a nice supply of a chocolate penny (probably left over from xmas that got lost, a grape, 2 cat biscuits and some sunflower seeds(from under the parrots cage)......needless to say i've cut off his food supply and served notice to quit!!
