How many times do you come home and dial 1471, only to find your best friend has rung 10 minutes ago, and so you press 3 to dial the number.
WELL DON'T!!!
I have just read that from the 1st August BT are charging 6p for every times you press 3 through 1471. Dialling 1471 will still be free but to press 3 it will cost 6p whether you are put through or not. Just think how many times you do that a day/week.
There is also new charges for 1571 enhanced features. All these new increases are written in the small print, in the back, of the updates brochure which comes free with your phone bill.

Another price increase is the Speaking Clock (123) which goes up from 10p fixed fee to 20p fixed fee.
Alternative numbers for the speaking clock are:
0845 0928081
0131 4777676
01923 287748
The minimum charge is only 5p for these numbers, but make sure you hang up after listening to the time as they are charged at the appropriate local or national rates of your telco, not fixed fees.0 -
Would you still pay this ridiculous fee pressing 3 if you are on one-tel ?0
-
1471/3 generates the call from the exchange, not from your handset. It will go via BT, not One-Tel. You would be better off with a caller display phone and dialling the displayed number.0

There are no charges for the 1571 service according to a BT operator I've spoken to today!0
-
There's also the increase for Ringback (press 5 on Engaged tone) from 10p to 15p.
Money grubbing b******s at BT aren't they !0 -

In the small print in this months update leaflet the charges for 1571 was a slight increase for the use of the enhanced features, which include setting your own welcome message and more storage space, the standard 1571 service will not be affected.0 -
These increased charged are for BT. does anyone know if NTL are going to make the same increases for the same service?0

It seems to me that BT do a lot of confusion marketing then up the costs in the small prints. best example is the latest ad where Jezza talks about them caring about everyone (or something) then at the bottom of the screen you see 'exclusions apply'.
As for the pressing 3 thing, as a Telecom Plus distributor I tell people not to do as as BT charge them for the call and it doesn't go through CPS. SO I would think this will be the case for most providers.0 -

You can ask BT to remove the Ringback facility on your telephone line by calling 150. This will prevent you from accidentally pressing the 5 when the number is engaged.
Please note that once you have pressed 5, you will still be charged the Ringback fee even though BT is unable to connect you within the next 45 minutes.0 -
And BT reckon how many people come back to them every day/week/month???
They say they're trying to be more competetive & then do sneaky little things like this. I'm so glad hubby convinced me to change to One-Tel a little while ago!
PS - thanks for the tip about the alternative speaking clock numbers, AP!0
