Motorbike Insurance (merged)

Options
I'm planning to buy a motorbike, but since it is about ten years since I had one, I don't have any no-claims discount (NCD). I'm planning to buy a Honda VFR800A-4 which is quite a big bike and I've had two quotes so far - one for £1094 :( and one for £659 from Norwich Union.

Does anyone have any tips or know of any bike insurers that might save me a couple of hundred quid off this?

Thanks in advance

How about Adrian Flux. They have a motorcycle section and gave my old man a good quote on a highly modified bike. They can offer a specialised quote service (rather than a generic across the board quote).

Our other bikes are insured through Carole Nash, who we've found to be very good.

Alternatively try the back of publications like Ride, often companies who offer insurance with no NCD will advertise in there.

Hi - suggest you try Hastings Direct who I can recommend for the efficient way they settled a car claim I had with them and ebikeinsurance who are a new online company insuring bikes only.Ebikes include breakdown recovery and legal expenses in the price. Also vauntage a broker based in Birmingham on 0121.693.7230.

    Hope this helps.

Hi - don't use your car insurance company. There are brokers who specialize in bike insurance and here are a few :

    ebikeinsurance
    motorcycledirect
    carolenash
    directchoice
    quotelinedirect
    insurance2000

Prices vary a great deal so it is worth the effort of getting several quotes. The saving can easily be £200/300 on a bigger bike.

    Best of luck

I have always found quotelibedirect very good, but they are pretty bad at spam. If you just want a quote then put in a false email address (you can always go back if you want to proceed).

i have my bike currently SORNed and am selling it, however, i have no insurance on it and am concerned someone may whip off with it whilst on a test ride (its not worth much but thats not the point)

now i dont want to insure it for a year, and only for theft, any ideas?

    thanks loops

You should not let anyone take it for a test ride without appropriate security.
This means leaving their car/bike and keys with you (and proof that they own it e.g. DVLA document) or a big pile of cash.
You'd be crazy to just let someone drive off with it.

Also, note that they cannot legally ride it on the road if you don't have road tax. I'm not sure whether you would be liable or them (I think them but not certain).

Yes, try your house insurance. You might find it much cheaper than a motor policy.
If it's in a locked garage then so much the better.

ahhh thanks, just spoken to a friendly policeman, and he says both parties would be liable, and i would risk upto 6 points on my licence!!!!!!

worth knowing me thinks, so i shall say NO test rides.... its only a £400 bike, so they either want it or they dont...
