Carpet Cleaners

Hi,

Im seriously thinking about buying a carpet cleaner. Dont want to spend more than £200 , want one thats easy to use, easy to clean , and gives good results. I havent really done much resarch into it yet, just had a quick flick through some catalogues and seen a few. So dont have any real preferences re makes etc

Anyone have any recommendations, would really like the ability to clean my stair carpet as well. Or websites/ retailers that they would recommend using.

Thanks in advance !!!

my recommendation is to hire a professional one every year and just buy a standard vacuum cleaner for the remainder of the year.

I have used a Vax in the past. Both my parents and the in-laws have Vax which they use for regular cleaning duty. The Multifunction Models (Which can be used for carpet washing/cleaning) range in price from £150 to £260.

Some other posts about hiring a dedicated cleaner would be worth doing for heavy soiling of carpets. However even they may struggle to get out bad stains.

Browse using Kelkoo, Pricerunner or Dealtime on Martins handy links in the blue bar at the top of the thread.

Agree with heatherw_01 about Bissell - get a reconditioned model (try the Bissell website) for approx half price - there's not much to go wrong on them anyway.

At the price of the reconditioned units it soon costs in to buy versus renting - especially if you get one to be shared between e.g. your extended family.

They don't work miracles, but certainly get things looking cleaner.

We found a steam cleaner worked wonders. Far better than the shampooers. Cost about £30 from DIY outlets.

Can you recommend any particular brand of steam cleaner please?

I don't want anything too big (barely room to keep one) or too expensive, but one that would clean carpets reasonably well. My landlord thought it would be a good idea to put a cream carpet in a lounge  and after 3 years of wear and tear, despite spot cleaning any spills or marks, it really could do with a good clean.

I'll be hiring professional cleaners to do right through when I move out anyway, but it would make life a lot easier to clean it regularly in the meantime.

Alternatively, rather than buying one, would any of the ones available for hire e.g. Rugdoctor, be a cheaper/better option?

We hired a Rug Doctor when we were selling our last house and we found it quite difficult to use. It was heavy and hard to move around corners and quite expensive with all the solutions. I now have a George cleaner, he's big brother to Henry and is fantastic. I bought a seperate turbo brush for the dog hairs, but he is great for everyday (well once a week) vaccing and is brilliant at washing my pale carpets. Very easy to use and clean out because it's basically just a bucket with a lid on. I bought it online for about £150 delivered. P.S He smiles at you as well!

Dont overlook the option to hire one.
You can get small to large industrial ones for the day or week end. Worth a look before you buy one.

I have a multi-function vax which is well over 20 years old and still going strong. I use it as my main vacuum all the time and to shampoo carpets once a quater, and to empty a defrosted chest freezer once every six months or so.
My parents used to hire a company to come in and clean carpets each year but were so dissapointed with the service that thy bought a bissell upright carpet washer which also works well and is easier to use than the vaz for shampooing but cannot be used as a regular vac.
I also have a cheepo steam cleaner (Earlex about £45) it is great for dredging up cat hair from carpet pile and fluffing and freshening but for ground in soiling and stains the vax is much better.

I've just spent all weekend vaxing my carpets. I've used the big Bissell, but didn't rate it - very heavy and used a lot of cleaning fluid IMO. I used to use one of the original vaxes (orange) that was a friends and it was great. Have one of the black multi-function ones now (£140 ish from Costco) and it's still OK - did my stairs and furniture too. You may have to treat/rub at particular stains but it still brought out lots of dirt that I didn't know was there.
