The cost of a prescription in Wales is now £4.00, went down a £1.00 last week, apparently the Welsh Assembly hope to make them free in the future sometime.

But I won't go into hospital waiting lists...................

Actually, had another thought. If you live in England, but on the Welsh/English boarder. You could probably cross into Wales to pay for a perscription you've picked up from your surgery in England?

Ive always used a prepayment certificate (being an asthma sufferer ), however save money even further by buying a 4 month one (33.90) - ensuring I get my next months prescription before it runs out then not renewing it until I need new medication - 1 month later - This way I am only paying the equivalant of 2.5 certificates a year (£82) instead of £93 - In case you need medication during those 'not covered' months, just renew it earlier if required -

at the moment it appears you can, although it will probably change when the free prescriptions for all come in so that you need a postecode within Wales to qualify

I had to start taking thyroxine recently for an underactive thyroid. It was a couple of months before I was told that it was one of the things that qualified for free scripts so I got a form from the dept of health website and took it for the GP's signature and now I'm exempt from charges - not only for the thyroxine but for all medications.

A line on my prescriptions states that repeat prescriptions are now for two months worth of drugs. I'm in Scotland. Don't know if this is a local thing, but obviously pre-payment certificates don't add up in my case. The lower charges are good for my blood pressure too.

Prescriptions are free for people on SOME benefits (eg Income Support or Income-based JSA) but not on others (eg Disability Living Allowance).

Take care, as they've been checking up and issuing high penalty charges on people claiming exemption wrongly - including an illiterate chap I was advising whose pharmacist (or poorly-trained pharmacy counter assistant) had "helpfully" ticked the IS box for him "because he was on benefits".

    Warning!

If you don't have a PPC (Prescription Pre-pay Certificate) and you want to reclaim prescription fees once you've got one, you must ask for a receipt when you pay for the prescription. You cannot go back for one later...

If your prescriptions are for 2 months supply you can save money on a 4 month prepayment. Buy the certificate when you need your first prescription, use the same prepayment for the second prescription, and just before the prepayment expires get a prescription repeat and get the third. This way you can get 6 months prescriptions on a 4 month prepayment certificate so you only need 2 per year. My husband always used to do this before he reached 60 and did not need to pay.

I also receive free prescriptions as I'm on Thyroxine, but not all GPs remember (or know) to offer this to their patients. I paid prescription charges for a couple of years until I moved house and changed GP.

If you are on a medication that you will be on for life it's worth asking your GP if it is on the 'free list'.

You can also look up the medical conditions that may entitle you to free prescriptions on via the ink below (cut and paste I'm afraid)

    http://www.ppa.org.uk/pdfs/HC11_hwhc.pdf pages 28 and 29

Its a pdf file so you'l need Acrobat.
